I know parks don’t like redundant safety devices because they slow down filling and emptying the rides, but an additional restraint isn’t a bad idea as rides push the envelope.

The article said one died and four others were injured. How would others get injured?

Goodbye Goliath.

Should have went with the over shoulder restraint.

Guy tossed out of seat into air on the decent down a hill and falls on/bounces off some in the rows behind him?

It has been open for 20 years and I believe this is the first to fall out.

On this ride and many like it the drops lift you off of your seat. The lap restraint is all that is keeping you in your seat.

Didn’t someone in Orlando fall from one of those tower drop rides at a sketchy park a few years ago? Don’t remember if that was restraint failure.

That was a gigantic dude who wasn’t properly locked into the restraints. They should’ve never let him on the ride.

Was he with his Aunt Janice?

Ride worked properly as designed

Employee modified the restraint to where it did not engage properly and when ride slowed down for ground approach he slid out of harness.

Poor poor training and ride ops.

Tower was taken down none the less.

That would be the centripetal force - centrifugal force being the false force that makes us feel like we're falling outward attributable to the angular momentum outpacing the true centripetal force because the former has a quadratic component.

Goliath is a fun ride! However, you’re only held in be a triangle shaped latch that doesn’t even cover your entire legs. My butt leaves the seat over the first hump no matter how hard I push the triangle down!

Confusing in that link. 1 dead and 4 injured. Makes it sound like more like it struck something.

Maybe the 4 injured is incorrect

These amusement parks are run by humans and many of them are not very bright. I hate them and get so nervous when my kids are on these rides.

The Mako at SeaWorld is like this. I’m usually an enjoyer of roller coasters but when I got off of that one I said “frick all that”!

Same. I fricking hate amusement parks because of the people who run them and the risk/reward analysis part of my brain is flashing BAD IDEA in huge red letters the whole time I am there.

Statistically speaking large amusement parks like cedar point are extremely safe.

Much more likely to be injured or die driving there.

quote:

the chance of being seriously injured on a fixed-site amusement park ride in the U.S. is roughly 1 in 15.5 million rides taken. The chance of a fatality on a roller coaster is even rarer, estimated at around 1 in 750 million.

Even safer than flying

How horrible would that be to witness? Even if the person doesn't hit you, just to see a body bouncing down the ride train. Nightmare fuel.

Ive never been on a roller coaster that completely relied on a restraint Usually g forces keep you in seat. Restraints are just extra

The Superman ride relies on restraints almost completely. I remember being terrified the whole time because of it
