If you go in with major red flags or uncertainty it will almost certainly end badly.

Ours wasn't some random, spur of the moment thing. We went to Vegas to get married because we didn't want to blow a bunch of money on a wedding.

Same.

Except my wife and I went to Hot Springs, AR (which was very nice). There were four people there. Me, my wife, and my parents.

My wife had been married before. She got married like a dummy around 22 or so. Those things never last. Big extravagant wedding.

I had no interest in that. Didn’t want to spend all sorts of money on something she’s already had before.

It’ll be 11 years in August.

my personal life I know a couple that didn’t make it 6 months. No affair but she thought he would change and he said “ I was drunk at a bar with a dip in my mouth and beer and cigarette in my hands when we met. What did she think she was getting?”

Sounds exactly like how I met my current wife. I was at Bear Creek, drunk, smoking cigs, with am ice chest full of beer in my old Junky truck. After we were married she tried the change me and my habits.

We just celebrated 23 years of marriage and about an hour ago I went outside to smoke a cig, while finishing up my beer. The one thing I allowed her to change was my driving while drinking or drink. I Don’t do that shite any more and realize now how stupid and irresponsible that was. I was soooo lucky I didn’t kill someone or myself while driving under the influence.

I ended up telling her basically what your friend did and after a bit she admitted to a partial victory and went back to work on her next straight move. She is still plotting and hoping she will change my old hard headed arse!! Lol but all true

I expect this sort of stuff from anyone who was an addict. Doesn't qualify IMHO.

I feel like if you marry an addict, you have to know there are going to be serious speed bumps along the way. Recovery is a struggle and it's not always perfect. My best friend married an addict and his wife has had a few setbacks in sobriety throughout the years, but he still stands by her side and helps her through it. He's a good man and upholds his vows.

Granted, we had issues going in.
Why get married then?

We had already gone through a lot and had survived for 5 years at that point. the poison pill was revealed like 2 weeks before the wedding (She had been talking to an ex behind my back). She insisted she broke it off. I tried to forgive her, and was stubborn and bet that we could move past it. I tried to make it work, but it never felt like she was 100% on the same team about making the marriage work. She refused to do couples counseling. When I could see she was spiraling into depression, she refused to go to therapy or even talk with her parents about it until things were already completely unraveled. I kept trying to hold her and us together, but the more I did, the more things fell apart. Once I stopped trying, everything got easier for her and us, but I completely came apart. She got her life together, started getting promoted at work, found a new church, and met the guy she would marry as soon as the ink was dry on the divorce. I eventually got my career on track, but I’ve never really recovered emotionally. Recently, I feel like I’ve started to turn a corner, but every day is still a struggle against chronic and serious depression.

6 months. Lived together for a few years before that.

The other one was 9 months. She did CrossFit. Her husband didn’t and was out of shape. She did a CrossFit guy. Now those two are married with kids living happily ever after.

I met this chick at a casino one night and things went well. This chick had a decent sales job and was respected at work. We ended up dating a few months until the red flags began to fly. She was 32; divorced once, broke off an engagement once, and filed for bankruptcy once that i knew of. I was not about to prolong her path of destruction.

As far as marriages go my mother has been married 3 times and probably has caused a few more divorces over the years. she is now running around with divorcee number two and they both claim they are spending the rest of their lives together.

I've stood in a couple of friend's weddings where the marriage lasted less than 2 years. Neither were a big shocker to me.

Same same. Married in Vegas at Caesar’s 18 years ago and wife and I are still together. Have watched many friends’ marriages implode during that timeframe.

I got married inVegas nearly 18 years ago, just me and her, still going strong.

We’ve been together 9 years and aren’t married, so we’ve watched people go through more than one marriage at this point.

My cousin's marriage lasted close to a year. She was cheating on him with a former boyfriend for a good portion of the latter half of the marriage. I had heard about it from a conversation with my grandmother and came close to writing the poor guy a anonymous letter, but decided to just mind my business. She claims he was cheating on her too, who knows. $40k wedding all paid by her parents.

We all told them not to do it. It was so obvious that it wouldn't work. Guess they had to find out themselves.

A couple of my SO’s friends were the same.

I don’t get how you don’t listen to trusted friends and family in these situations.

Sounds like mine, except our actual wedding wasn't in a nice place.

Got married by JOP in an establishment that sold merchandise in a sketchy area. We had 5 people. Me, my wife, my mom, her parents.

Honeymoon was a nice-ish hotel in Natchitoches and a dinner. We got a gift basket and some cash from relatives. The next day we were back in town. It'll be 3 years in September.

To an outsider it sounds really drab, but we both look back on it as one of the best days of our life. We didn't want any big thing, her dad offered to pay for us put on an nice wedding with 100 or so people, and the thought of that made us both wanted throw up. We just wanted to be married and have a nice, quiet evening.
