Last time I was there in 2024 I swore I would never go back....how are things like crime, open air drug use and homeless encampments today?

….About what you’d think it’s like.

I have many family members who live in that area. My understanding is that downtown conditions have improved since the poopy walking paths days.
Still, that place is expensive beyond comprehension and if you go to the nice parts outside the city it is quite nice.

Just spent a week there in May. No problems whatsoever. Walked downtown, chinatown, all the popular areas. Only saw a few homeless people, but they were too messed up to even be an issue. Didn't feel unsafe at all. But I was only there for a week.

How about you just let them live their life without your judgy-ness
Maybe they're making the best decision for them and/or their family

Heading over there this week. Haven't been in a few years. I've always been around lower Nob Hill and Russian Hill areas and never had the first problem.
Stay away from certain areas - Tenderloin, for example - and it should be fine. Lots of great, small neighborhood communities in the city but it is expensive as hell to live there.

Not as bad as people make it out to be. It gets pretty sketchy in some areas, but what city doesn't?
It is a really beautiful place, just has some really fricked up policies. You would never want to (or probably afford to) live there, but a really cool place to visit.

Consider Redwood City or Mountain View to live and commute to SF. Those areas are expensive as hell too, but they are nicer.

It’s a beautiful city but the people suck

Avoid the tenderloin, otherwise it’s amazing.

It's an awesome world class city with endless opportunity, if you can afford it.

I just can't stand the people there.
But it has been cleaned up a bit in last few years.
