A lot of jobs in certain industries still frown on them. My buddy is pretty high up in a bank, and had to shave his beard off before he could move up. It wasn't mandated, but one of those understood rules.
I interviewed at a small, family owned business for a controller position, and they flat out asked me in the interview if I'd be willing to shave my beard. I told them not as a consideration of employment, but I would consider it upon accepting the position. They never offered it to me.

One of my friends is a jail warden and he said that the whole “beard” thing started in jail

This is surprising to hear since, anecdotally-speaking, i kind of feel like *not* having a beard is more of an outlier these days- since almost everyone seems to have one.. again, just anecdotally-speaking, and maybe it’s because i’ve lived & worked mostly in big cities over the last several years, maybe things are different if you’re talking about a small town or something.

I don't have much of a beard despite not shaving. I trim it with clippers about once or twice per week with a #2 guard. I do my neck with no guard.
All of my facial hair is salt and pepper grey now. It would probably be a pretty wicked looking beard if I grew it out

Mine started going grey around 35-38. The grey definitely has overtaken the brown on the face for sure.

It's definitely more acceptable now than it was 10-20 years ago. My buddy I mentioned has been at the same bank for 20 years, and had a beard for a lot of that time. But it was understood when he got to a certain level, it had to go.

I started a beard they day I graduated high school and kept it through my first year of college. Got it out of my system and haven't had one since.

As others have said.....you’ll get past the itchy phase and you won’t even know it’s there until you look in the mirror. My beard is large and in charge. My wife hates it, but IDGAF.

I’ve used many, but I found Honest Amish beard oil on Amazon and it works better than most

I have shaved completely once in ten years and I couldn't stand it. I itched continuously until 3-4 days passed and the stubble took back over. So I am the exact opposite of the OP.
