My history books must be outdated. How many times did this happen?

Are you trying to say that our enemies have never attacked us with aircraft? Because that would be pretty dumb.

Fortunate to have been stationed on the Nimitz and got to watch these amazing machines operate up close. Nothing like seeing a tomcat launch off the cat or seeing one coming in and catching the wire.

We had VF-211 “Flying Checkmates” with CAW9 during my time on board in 97-98.

Not a F-14 but it’s a photo taken in the marshes of LA. My dad is in the boat under the windshield on the VHF talking to a very close friend that is flying the FA-18

Ummmm…….. I believe that is a tad below the hard deck.

He wasn’t below the hard deck for more than a few seconds. He had the shot. He took it.

Operational in 1974 and still looks like it could shoot down any enemy planes today.

Iran is the only country in the world that still flys the F-14. I think they have about 12-16 operational planes still left.

It's a shame that the original Pratt & Whitney TF-30s we're so bad and that budget constraints prevented more aircraft from being retrofitted as A +, B's and new build D's having the much better GE F-110 engine.

Mav is only cool when you’re a kid. In reality I wouldn’t want some dangerous jackass flying planes for the US.

We were soooooo far ahead of everyone else in those days. Hard to believe the 15 came shortly after and is still a dominate plane.

The A-10 would never even catch a glimpse of the Tomcat before a phoenix missle blew it in half.

The A-10 is a great, tough, SLOW ground support flying tank, but it would never survive flying CAP or in a dogfight. It’s not meant for that.

but looking back, the gray was probably the right thing to do.

BOOOOO! BOOOOOO!

But, yeah, what you say is right. If it takes two man hours to paint the vertical stabilizers, that's two man hours that can't go toward making the aircraft battle ready.

It doesn't make losing that part of history and esprit de corps suck any less, though.
