Different roles. The two would most likely never meet as opponents. A-10's are ground support and close air support. F-14's primary role was providing CAP for fleet protection and air-to-air combat.

The only military aircraft I don't like is the F-35 JSF. A total waste of funding. And I'll never understand Navy wanting a single engine fighter for deployment at sea. If I'm a naval aviator flying over endless miles of water, I'm damned sure gonna want some redundancy when it comes to my engines!

Iceman was more badass than Maverick.

Yeah, well, that makes you a dumbass. Mav never had to beg Ice to come help...and Ice never banged the instructor, and Ice never went 4g inverted dive so his RIO could snap a polaroid. Without slider Iceman was a taller Hollywood.

Yeah, dont forget it pal.

The F-14 squadron art was the last gasp of an era started with WW2 nose art.

The A7 and S3 Viking community had some nice artwork as well. Even some of the rotorcraft were in on it. They all fell victim to the gray ghost in the can though.

Wil this trend ever come back? Sure sounds like wishful thinking I suppose…

No, I don't think so. As I mentioned it was very hard to maintain those finishes in that kind of environment. Add the close proximity to other aircraft and working personnel makes it difficult to be spraying paint on the hangar deck.
It was cool while it lasted and gave some sort of individuality to each squadron, but looking back, the gray was probably the right thing to do.

If I were CAG and had a "Maverick" in my command, I promise you I'd be removing him from the front seat of a Tomcat and putting him in a C-2 delivering mail to the fleet. He was irresponsible as all hell.

Not a F-14 but it’s a photo taken in the marshes of LA. My dad is in the boat under the windshield on the VHF talking to a very close friend that is flying the FA-18.

Thanks for your service! The Nimitz was always my favorite carrier as well. Largest carrier in the world for many, many years. I have an old CVN-68 cap with scrambled eggs on the bill around the house here somewhere. (Damn, I wish I knew where all my cool shite disappeared to when I got married and my wife packed up all my stuff in boxes!)

Legendary F-14 Pilot Dale ‘Snort’ Snodgrass Dies In A Tragic Plane Crash - July 25, 2021

Snort took me for a back-seat ride in the P-51 Mustang at the St Louis airshow in 1998. After he got me crammed into the jumpseat he started leafing through his checklist. " Give me a couple of minutes, I've been mostly flying the Corsair lately."

Thanks. Nimitz was still fairly new when I was aboard and it was a big leap forward from some of the old oil burners that were still in service. I would imagine the Ford Class is even a much bigger improvement.
