its possible, I knew one guy that was officer, a SEAL, and later went through flight training. There has been a article posted here about a guy that was a SEAL, then became a medical doctor, and is now a astronaut, some people are more motivated than others.

Saw a guy in Portsmouth Va, visiting someone at hospital, had trident and aviator wings.. not sure what he flew.

Flew with a guy at AA who claimed to be former UDT. Didn't believe him and gonna need a link before I believe in the SEAL/F-14 transition.

plausible... post vietnam force reductions culled some pure UDT guys also when SEAL teams absorbed existing UDT guys some opted out.

There was a Navy flight surgeon that after taking familiarization flights as part of the flight surgeon training syllabus loved it so much he later completed pilot training People would do a double take when they saw him wearing two sets of wings. Think he flew the old P3 Orion sub chaser.

The Air Force had a couple of them early on for evaluation. They were never deployed as an operational unit. This would have been the "C" model which did not incorporate the Phoenix missile system.

The Phoenix is WHY Grumman pitched the Tomcat to USAF. They never expected to replace the F-15 in sales. They were hoping to sell a limited number of them for the old Air Defense Command, Grumman's reasoning being that the ADC bomber intercept mission was similar to USN's fleet defense requirements (basically, shooting down bombers carrying missiles), and so the Tomcat was tailor-made for the role. USAF politely looked, and then said no, as everyone knew they would: they'd been buying Navy planes for 10 years (F-4's and A-7's), and had developed an institutional chip on their shoulder about it. Grumman just wanted to sell something like 150 planes to USAF... a pretty small order.... and the Air Force was having none of it. Eagles were going to take those roles, because buying them for the air defense role would bring down the price overall for all the birds they wanted in TAC.

I was on the Independence. We had VF-21 and VF-154 squadrons with Tomcats. I loved those fighters. HUGE engines. My first encounter with the sound barrier was when we had an airshow off the coast of Darwin Australia. They had multiple practices and in one there was a F-14 that came parallel with the flight deck almost at a stall. He hit the afterburners and I honestly thought the plane exploded. I had no idea how bad arse they were until that day. It went from like 500 mph to mach 1.5 in like 2 seconds and was gone.

I never felt too much love to the FA-18 like I did the Tomcat. It was just special. VF-154 Tomcats had the camera pod. I had a PH friend attached to their squadron who had some awesome pics.

the upgraded F-15 Strike Eagle is more a cousin to the F-14 than the original F-15 Eagle.

That's a negative Ghostrider

The Strike Eagle started out when they started putting conformal fuel tanks on reg F-15 models as a test to increase the a/c's range.
The USAF needed a replacement for it's aging F-111 long range fighter/bomber (tactical bomber) and saw the Strike Eagle package as the answer.

One reason my old base at Lakenheath converted from the F-model 111 to the Strike Eagle to keep a long-range tactical fighter bomber in the European theater.

The only similarity to the F-14 is it's a two engine fighter and the WIZZO (electronic warfare officer) sit's in the back seat.

Hell the F-14 has more in common, of sorts, with the F-111F , as they both used the TF-30 Pratt and Whitney engines.

Well....that and they both lost a bird during Desert Storm where as the F-15 came through with it's no-loss record intact.

"TARPS" tactical aerial recon pad system" the "peeping tom" patches were cool. I don't think tomcats could go from 5oo knots to mach 1.5 in 2 seconds. but I saw that move several times... more like just past the sound barrier

uhh come again with that.....

17/18 January 1991: F-15E-46-MC, 88-1689, c/n 1098/E073, of the 335th FS, 4th TFW, USAF, was shot down by anti-aircraft artillery on the first day of Operation Desert Storm.[6][24][25]
19/20 January 1991: F-15E-46-MC, 88-1692, c/n 1101/E076, of the 336th FS, 4th TFW, USAF, was shot down by an Iraqi SA-2E missile during Operation Desert Storm. Both crew members ejected and were POWs.[6][24][25]

comparing that to only 1 tomcat from the "sluggers" VF 103 - that was also splashed with a sam...... No US tomcat has ever been shot down by an opposing bird either...

I’ve heard the stories too, but like you have no proof. Interesting though and possible.
