We stood outside and watched the Tomcatters flyover the base in formation when they returned from the final deployment. Sad day. I have some Tomcat Sunset memorabilia around here somewhere.

Relative of mine was shot down in an F-14 and spent ~6 years as a guest of the Viet Cong. Unspeakable torture. Came back and retired as a Wing Commander as a Colonel.
Said the F-14 was like 'flying a barn door with two rocket engines attached to it'.
Hated John "song bird" McCain too.
Damn, what a pretty plane though.

Here, have a downvote.
I don't fricking believe you!
Mainly because F-14s weren't even operational during the Vietnam conflict.
And, maybe, just maybe because I have never seen a Colonel in the USN.
You're an idiot.

Not saying he's right....but you're wrong.

The Tomcat made its combat debut during Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of American citizens from Saigon, in April 1975. F-14As from Fighter Squadron 1 (VF-1) and VF-2, operating from USS Enterprise, flew combat air patrols over South Vietnam to provide fighter cover for the evacuation route.[3]
That being said....I didn't see anything about an F-14 getting shot down. They said planes came under fire but only that they didn't engage back at them.
quote:
Casualties
For an operation of the size and complexity of Frequent Wind, casualties were relatively light. Marine corporals McMahon and Judge killed at the DAO compound were the only members of US forces killed in action during the operation and they were the last US ground casualties in Vietnam.[14]:56–7 A Marine AH-1J SeaCobra ran out of fuel while searching for USS Okinawa and ditched at sea, the two crew members were rescued by a boat from USS Kirk.[10]:201 A CH-46F Swift 1-4 of HMM-164 from USS Hancock flown by Captain William C. Nystul[29] and First Lieutenant Michael J. Shea[30] crashed into the sea on its approach to the ship after having flown a night sea and air rescue mission. The two enlisted crew members survived, but the bodies of the pilots were not recovered. The cause of the crash was never determined.[10]:201
I'm not gonna say that dude's relative didn't get shot down in Vietnam but he wasn't in an f-14 if he did go down.
Also yes....there is no such thing as a Colonel in the US Navy.

Out of curiosity I did find a guy that got shot down and spent roughly 6 years as a POW and did promote to Commander while captured.
that really fricking sucks.

Prisoner of war and "The Stratton Incident"
Stratton was flying an A-4 Skyhawk on January 5, 1967, as part of an armed reconnaissance mission over Thanh Hóa Province to bomb the My Trach ferry. When the ferry could not be found, Stratton spotted a set of barges one mile further upriver and rolled in to attack the craft with rockets. Stratton was forced to eject from his plane when debris was ingested into the engine. According to Stratton he was shot down when the missile he fired from his wing dropped away as it was designed however failed to ignite its engine until it was behind him. Then when the missile engine started the heat seeker locked onto his exhaust trail and he shot himself down. When telling this story he chuckled about adding this to his record of number of aircraft shot down.
that really fricking sucks.

Can’t link images from this site but they have awesome pictures.
I don't know shite about photography and even less about jets but I am curious what the shutter speed has to be for that jet to be that close and in focus.

Worked with a guy who was a F-14 Pilot and retired Seal. The most educated, Alfa, kinda nerdy and nicest person I've ever met.
Posted on 8/3/21 at 6:16 am to Potchafa
How is that possible? And alfa? Really?

Damn that jolly Roger scheme is sexy
There’s an 80s movies staring (a young) Martin Sheen called “The Final Countdown” that was filmed on the Nimitz and has great footage of the Jolly Rogers and Flying Aces too, I believe. Awesome old movie if you can find it. Way before Top Gun and way better IMO. Worth a watch if you can see it.
And that paint scheme was as awesome in the movie as it is in the pics

I forgot that Iran’s air-force also has them for some reason

Guilty as charged.
Confused the F-14 with the F-4 Phantom.
