In my quest to never be this person I read a study once that stated never share a relative story to the one that's being told in a group setting. Kinda always stuck with me.

Admittedly, I've done it in the past. It's actually very narcissistic.

Got a friend at church like that. No matter what the subject. Lots of stuff I avoid talking about when he is around. I found a silver quarter metal detecting last month and mistakenly told him. “ I bought fifty of those yesterday.”

There was this guy Scott who would bring vegetables and fruit from his garden to share at work. He started bringing in these delicious watermelons he grew. They weren’t huge but they were good and “Topper” was jealous of the attention Scott was getting. So he started saying, “I don’t know what the big deal is, my watermelons get bigger than those”. So we asked him to prove it and stayed on him about it. So he shows up with a large watermelon one day he claimed to grow. Someone noticed that if you looked close, you could see he had rubbed off the price on it. He tried to deny it, and quickly left the room! “Topper” was busted!

Lol this may be the best first reply post I’ve seen in 20 years of hanging around here.
Just so happens I was just talking about this phenomenon with my family about an hour ago. There is a family that lives near me and every male in the extended family is a topper. You get three or four of them together in one conversation and shite gets wild.

Obviously you've never had the salsa in Ecuador.

We had a couple in our euchre group like this. They would try to copy all the food/drinks that my wife and I served when we hosted and recreate them with some very minor change like they made something new and then go into great detail about.

Knew a guy at work like that.
It me of the contractors we worked with called him “The Million Year Old Man “.
I said Oh yeah, how is that?
Contractor replied, Because he would have to be a million years old to have done everything that he says he has done.
Lol.

Everyone eventually runs into one of those. It seems close to some narcissistic mental affliction.

I’ve known more than you.

I know a dude.. No matter what you tell him his uncle in Texas did it better. Sometimes people make up stories to tell him to see what he will say.

I knew a guy like that from my two semesters living in Hatcher dorm at LSU. Any time someone told a story, he knew someone who did more, went farther, whatever. As soon as the 1st story ended, he would say, "I got this friend... ."

Never heard them called toppers. I’ve only heard em called one uppers.
Posted on 3/23/25 at 10:30 pm to UptownJoeBrown
One uppers for sure. I have a lot of them in my social circle. It’s a narcissistic trait. I have limited my time i spend wither them over the years especially once i became aware of the trait.
If you don’t entertain their one-uppers and give them a “oh, ok” or “gotcha” they will turn to the next person that will feed the ego.
