re: Maester's Thread - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (S1, HBO) - Book Spoilers

The flashback was set immediately after the Red Grass Field, where Roger of Pennytree died. I think they wanted to depict Ser Arlan as being in a major depression following that loss.
I was thinking this too at first. I figured the story was going to be that finding Dunk gave Ser Arlan a renewed sense of purpose, which would have been a nice touch, but it never played out that way. Maybe they are planning ahead and will flesh it out more next season. As for him speaking Dothraki, that’s news to me. Maybe there’s more to Ser Arlan than we know and we’ll find out in future seasons that he spent time among the Dothraki? I don’t know why else they would have dropped that in there.

Plus, really wish they kept the strategy of using tournament lances because they were longer.
I agree 100%. The show is great and quite faithful to the book overall, so I probably shouldn’t be bitching. But this is one of several changes that I just don’t understand. This was a good scene in the book that shows how Baelor came in with a plan and immediately took command of Dunk and his crew. The show runner replaced that with “stay calm, be vigilant, and don’t die.” There was some great dialogue in other parts of the story that was inexplicably left out of the show as well. If you have great dialogue at hand, why not use it all? It’s not like they needed to save time. I also don’t understand why they felt the need to portray Ser Arlan as a total drunkard. I understand there has to be changes in any adaptation for various reasons, but these were unforced errors in my opinion.

We are living through the prequel to Idiocracy.

Exactly what I was thinking, but I won’t hold my breath. I’m sure the letter will be especially strongly worded though.

You are close enough. For the last 6 seasons, here are his stats Points: 27.0 PPG Rebounds: 12.3 RPG Assists: 9.2 APG Field Goal %: 59.0% Three-Point %: 38.5% Free Throw %: 82.5% True Shooting %: 67% (highest all time) PER: 32.1 (best all time, his average is higher than Jordan's best year) The best stats of all time over 6 seasons by far. He has averaged a triple double over the last 4 seasons.
This is insane. I knew he was good but didn’t realize it was anything like this.

Forgive me. I haven’t watched a single NBA game since 2020 and only watched sporadically since around 2012. I was a rabid fan from about 1990 until around 2010. Am I understanding you correctly that Jokic has averaged 30+ points, 10+ rebounds, and 10+ assists over the last 6 years?!? This can’t be right?? I must be misunderstanding somehow…

Write this down: HVAC-as-a-service is the model of the future. Nobody cares about the unit; they pay for cold air to come out of their vents. Just like internet; you pay for connectivity, not a modem.
A few years ago this would have sounded absurd, but you’re probably right. It seems like every industry took it to heart when that German fricker told us “you will own nothing and you will be happy.”

Honorable mention was watching Darren McFadden and Felix Jones (seemingly at the time) dashing our national championship dreams by combining for 385 motherfricking yards rushing.
I have fricking PTSD because of both of these. I also occasionally wake up in the night sweating and screaming “frick you Cam Newton!!”
re: What’s the greatest country song of all time?
Posted by VaultDweller on 7/9/25 at 10:51 pm to GeauxldMember
Man this is a great question but it’s too difficult for me. The best country singer of all time is either George Jones or George Strait. I don’t know which. Next is Alan Jackson, then Randy Travis, then Hank Jr. Since I’m an indecisive prick, i will give you my top song by each artist.
George Jones - She Thinks I Still Care
George Strait - The Cowboy Rides Away
Alan Jackson - Who Says You Can’t Have It All
Randy Travis - I Told You So
Hank Jr. - Weatherman
One of those is the greatest country song of all time.

I just stumbled on this podcast yesterday and then immediately got his audiobook.
I haven’t started the book yet, but I don’t think Ibrahim is trying to argue that the Romans or the Christians were angels. I think he’s trying to argue that Muslims are not the historical innocent victims that many try to portray them as today. Islam was spread by conquest, and to many in the Muslim world the war has never ended.

I completely agree. There are plenty of other countries with cheap labor who are not trying to supplant the US and who would be happy to manufacture our knick knacks. If we have to outsource some shite, we should at least be sending it to a country that’s not a threat.
re: Casting a black actor as Snape in upcoming Potter series is just awful

Haven’t seen this mentioned, but I seem to remember that all the award organizations (Oscars, Emmys, etc.) have diversity quotas now. So if you want your show to be considered for these awards, you have to diversify your cast. I know that Hollywood doesn’t really need any convincing, but this could be part of the motivation.

There have been a few times in my life when I’ve had a mindless hatred for a person based only on the sound of their voice and their manner of speaking, regardless of what they are actually saying. This is one of those times, and Patricia Millett is one of those people.

My thoughts exactly. How many of the Mexican marines are on the cartels’ payroll and will go tell the cartels everything they learn from our special forces? I expect training Mexican troops will be about as effective as the training we did in Afghanistan and Iraq. If we want the cartels dead, we will have to kill them ourselves. Mexico will not do it for us.
