This is 100% worth the rivers of tears that will flow

If the board refuses, I'm assuming there's nothing stopping him from increasing his position after the stock tanks and doing it all over again with a much discounted offer
He can buy it for $8/share less, and just buy 51%. He can then replace the board that turned down the fat cash.

Thomas Jefferson, the Roosevelts, and JFK were also all exceptionally wealthy as well.
Jefferson died in extreme debt. His family had to sell everything to pay it off.
If Musk buys Twitter, I might actually sign up.

They won’t let him buy it
1) Twitter is worth more to the larger investors for control of free speech than it is for a profit
2) Elon isn’t offering enough. He’d have to blow them out with $65+ per share to convince them to sell. The $54 offer is a fake attempt for appealing to retail (I like Elon and I like his strategy here, but he knows buyouts need to be higher above the market price)
3) I don’t think he really wants to buy it outright. It would be too much of a drag on his time. I think he benefits far more from playing the threatening active investor here so he doesn’t have to invest nearly as much time, takes credit for good changes he thinks of, and no lost reputation for the failings of the company
I agree that it's not a slam dunk. The other issue you didn't raise is that the SEC already hates him and I suspect they will happily collude with the Board to try to interfere with getting this done.

The amount of crying happening at Twitter HQ would be a sight to see.

This is correct. It was in his press release statement.

And that's his ultimate goal. So he can then buy it for even cheaper.
This dude manipulates the stock market like I've never seen before, he's done it through mere tweets, so of course he wants to buy it.

Musk will turn Twitter into a subscription based service if this ends up coming to fruition. You can have your free speech. But you gotta pay for it!!

Having the profitability of Twitter tied to advertising dollars mirrors the same issue that we currently have with TV news sources.

That would kill the platform. Elon isn't that stupid.

Don’t like it, make your own social media platform.
Remember?

As was totally predictable there are a couple left wingers in here melting the frick down over this and it's very entertaining. The thought of free speech for everyone triggers them

I don’t use social media other than Instagram. Facebook and Twitter are too political and catty for my interests.

Progressives hate free speech. They are so hard against civil liberties, yet claim to be in support of them.

Can he buy facebook next?
NO. He's in the business to make money and the 3 letter agencies aren't going to pump money into it if he owns it. Plus, he'd rather beat them at their own game and grind them into the dust while bankrupting Zuckerborg.
What they are finally realizing is that Musk is a real genius and not just a media created one, a savvy business man, the richest man in the world (that we know of) and DGAF.
In addition, I think somehow during his time in Africa he acquired honey badger DNA into his, cause he damn sure takes what he wants.

If he pulls this off I may just have to rejoin Twitter.
