1. You need a very expensive charger in your house
I don't know of a single EV that doesn't come with a charger.

2. Your city/neighborhood does not have the grid capacity
The vast majority of charging happens at night when the grid has excess capacity.
quote:

3. There are not half enough power plants
Current capacity can handle years of growth, and many EV owners also buy solar to both offset their consumption and get the maximum benefit of the EV.

4. We can't pull our heads out of our asses to decide what kind of power plants are safe to build (coal=bad nuke=war natgas=fracking)
Policy issue, but diversification and decentralization are probably the best way forward.

5. Virtually the entire supply chain for batteries comes from unfriendly nations
If we're smart, we will boost production here. Even if we stop going to EVs, the rest of the world won't. We'd be wise to lead here rather than follow.

The only scam is you thinking all these companies will be 100% electric in 8+ years.

Horses are not more than sufficient vs gas. However, electric IS inferior to gas.

Comes off as “what a scam these automobiles are! You telling me the government is going to build a road from New Orleans to Baton Rouge or something?! Just roads everywhere that I can just drive from place to place?!”

Your premise sounds like everyone turns in combustion keys tmr and drive away in EV. Nope.

No expensive charger needed. Organic destination charging growth at pace w/grid capacity. Lots of apt / grocery / urban city destination charging planned. At service stations too. It will be wind and solar in progressive European countries first. Already happening.

the biggest scam?

An electric car provides some value at least.

I can think of a dozen government agencies that don’t.

One of the things I’ve read recently is that electric cars only have about a 10 year lifespan. This is due to the fact that it’s not economically feasible to replace the batteries. This might be why all these car manufacturers are getting behind the EV movement – in the long term they'll be selling more cars due to obsolescence.

Interestingly, American automakers used to engage in planned obsolescence. Unfortunately for the American automakers, Honda and Toyota pretty much put an abrupt halt to that in the 70's and 80's.

With a single onboard charger plugged into a standard 110-volt outlet, Tesla says you will get 5 miles of range for every hour of charging. From zero to 300 miles would take about 52 hours at that rate.

My work commute is less than 50 miles a day.

I paid an electrician $345 to install a 70v charge plug in my garage. I can draw 23 miles of charge an hour.

I also got a waiver from Alabama Power which reduces my electricity cost per kWh for ALL of my energy use from 9pm to 5 am (when I am charging).

What complex issues do I have driving my Tesla (that I bought used for less than 30% of new cost) with this routine?

None.

You got scammed. Your quality of life may have improved but random people on a message board think you are soft. Overall, it’s a fail. Sorry.

Young man assumes change equals "progress" without asking toward what we are progressing.

Look......

All I really want to do is be able to frick in the back seat while the car drives me to dinner without killing me. When that happens, I will call it "Progress".

And, I know that is possible now if I hire someone like OweO to drive me. I'm not an OT Baller, though.

Here are some examples for recharging times: With a single onboard charger plugged into a standard 110-volt outlet, Tesla says you will get 5 miles of range for every hour of charging. From zero to 300 miles would take about 52 hours at that rate.

That's misleading. You listed the lowest charge rate and not even the scenario you would use that rate. I drive 30 miles per day. If I wanted to use the slowest charge rate, I could charge back that 30 miles between midnight and 6 AM.

The fastest rate is around 35 miles per hour and could recharge 200+ miles in the same timeframe.

Except that Tesla is going to a cobalt-free (mainly Congo) to a silicon and mine their lithium in Nevada.

Appx 3,000 fewer parts and you can sell it for more. Tesla proved they'll sell, at scale, if designed well and work well. Everyone else jumped on the bandwagon.

You are spot on. Lol. It’s heading that way and I am sure we will all adapt to it eventually, but it’s waaaay to early in the game to switch. Let the trailblazers pay to set up the infrastructure for us and we will swagger in on the backside.
