Mexico’s most notorious drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, was convicted Tuesday of running an industrial-scale smuggling operation after a three-month trial packed with Hollywood-style tales of grisly killings, political payoffs, cocaine hidden in jalapeno cans, jewel-encrusted guns and a naked escape with his mistress through a tunnel. Guzman faced a drumbeat of drug-trafficking and conspiracy convictions that could put the 61-year-old escape artist behind bars for decades in a maximum-security U.S. prison selected to thwart another one of the breakouts that embarrassed his native country. New York jurors whose identities were kept secret reached a verdict after deliberating six days in the expansive case, sorting through what authorities called an "avalanche" of evidence gathered since the late 1980s that Guzman and his murderous Sinaloa drug cartel made billions in profits by smuggling tons of cocaine, heroin, meth and marijuana into the U.S. Evidence showed drugs poured into the U.S. through secret tunnels or hidden in tanker trucks, concealed in the undercarriage of passenger cars and packed in rail cars passing through legitimate points of entry — suggesting that a border wall wouldn't be much of a worry.

We should let the jurors move here and give them new identities. Same for the witnesses and prosecutors.

In exchange Mexico can pay us $5.7 billion.....

That’s true but the statement is accurate. I’m all for a wall but if anyone thinks it will do much more than slow anything down isn’t realistic. People want in to the greatest economy they will find a way. Drugs the same.

.22 bullet to his head and be done with it. No reason taxpayers should have to pay to keep him in prison

That does sound like a hell of a lot of fun though.

It's certainly the opposite of rocket31's thread as far as lifestyles go.

So what’s the back story as to how he was first caught? Did the columbians turn him in? Some Sinaloa higher ups got popped and rolled him?

Drugs even more of the same, actually. We consume more drugs than the rest of the world. There is absolutely no way in hell a wall would stop these cartels.

There was a time when coke was being brought in through NY via airplane. Where there's billions to be made, there's a way.

The juror's already gave a verdict, what would be the incentive to kill them now? The murders and threats of murder usually happen before a verdict.

That would violate the extradition agreement with Mexico. Perhaps you are not a man of your word, but the US has to be. Otherwise, he never would have been extradited and would still be running the show (he’s still running the show now through channels, but it would be with less influence from Ishmael).

If the US did not want taxpayers to pay to keep him in prison they shouldn’t have extradited him.
