He got rich way before the casinos

One of his biggest scams was the nursing homes. He made sure that the state only issued a limited number of licenses so that made the value jump and then he made sure that only his friends got licenses.

He did the same thing with casino’s.
He limited the casino licenses and his friends won the licenses which were open to everyone of course. Guidry made 90mil off of his license when he sold out to Treasure Chest shortly after he got his license. Then he turned on Edwin and helped the feds put him in jail to save his own arse when they were coming down on him.

I guess he saw these as victimless crimes but people got hurt either in the crossfire (see al Copeland vs Guidry) or through kickback schemes where the state overpaid for deals paid for by taxpayer money.

What’s the joint committee of bureaucrats?

There is a committee you have to go before in the Division of Administration to have your contract formally approved if it exceeds XXX amount of money. I can’t remember the exact threshold. It has been almost 10 years since I been out the game.

One is an attorney for DOA and there are two to three other people. A lady named Pam Rice, who I always liked, used to run it. It escapes me what offices they’re from but their purpose is oversight.

Nearly impossible"? EWE was incredibly intelligent, matching his level of corruption, and over the yrs he developed foolproof ways to make money off of State business. One small example, never provable: a good friend ran a court reporting business & did a lot of work for the State's attys. In case after case after case, a suit against the State would drag on & on, for yrs, no progress. Finally, the State's Atty General's Office would, out of the blue, re-assign the case to an outside law firm. A politically law firm. Bam! The case would wake up, legal fees after legal fees generated by this out side firm. Case would settle, and guess who got an under the table part of the settlement? This amount times the 1000's of suits against the State under EWE. If there was a State nickle involved somewhere, EWE got his share.

Professional services contracts (CPAs, Drs, Attorneys) are typically exempt and under direction of the executive/appointing authority.

Exactly. He could live forever, like I indicated in the OP. But I think EWE knows he may be headed toward the exit

I know of 3 businesses he had a hand in in the 80s. It was a well known fact.

That said, he was a very friendly guy the couple of times I met him.

I truly hope that whatever time he has left, he spends it in peace. Like another poster mentioned, I too would line to know where the money is stashed !

They're still looking for Huey Long's stash. The dirty secret is there ain't none. To keep an enterprise like that afloat, the money goes out the door as soon as it comes in.

He’s one of those guys that I can’t force myself to dislike, even though I know he’s guilty of a lot of stuff (kind of like OJ). He was a crook, but he got shite done.
He did not “get things done”.

He scared off business and industry from investing in Louisiana and in doing so, he scared off most opportunities for our best and brightest to stay here.

Look around, are you happy with most of who you see are left here?

Most of those who are left are too dumb to realize how badly he fricked the State.

All while never taking a dime from the State.

He’s a brilliant crook.

Y'all keep harping on Edwards and the casino licenses.

Please look it up and see he was NOT the governor when casino gambling was legalized. Try Buddy Roemer for that one.

I can't believe all the people in here blowing Edwards. The man is a crook, is evil, and took the people of this state for a ride. Yet, the stupid people of this state will still sing his praises.

He is nothing but a common criminal, he is probably the worst thing to happen to the state of Louisiana.

Edwin W. Edwards puts himself in hospice care

Good riddance to that pice of shite.

What Edwin did to Louisiana and how he did his best to pick up where Huey Long left off and completely institutionalize corruption, grift and an anti-business mindset in this state was so devastating we're still fighting to recover from his time as Governor and that's not going to get any better given that we have his political twin in office as Governor right now.

frick Edwin Edwards and his snake oil bullshite.

He Graduated HS with my Grandpa, they stayed friends until my grandpa died. Despite the negative posts on here, he’s a good dude, and did what he thought was best for the State during his time. My grandpa was his Commissioner of Administration. They built prisons and infrastructure around small towns, giving them jobs that nobody ever mentions. When Jindal tried to privatize prisons, and still have the State pay the Bill grandpa stopped it.

He gets an undeserved bad rep. Nobody knows the inside details of what went down when he went to prison. It’s not as cut and dry as some of y’all seem to think

"Undeserved bad rep"? Good Lord. There aren't enuff pages here to describe all the moneys he & his cronies made from the State. "Inside details of what went down..... "? The 2 times he got off were when he was tried in State court, with a jury of "his peers" & district judges who were politicians. He was found guilty in a Federal court with a Federal judge presiding over a jury drawn from a completely different kind of jurors pool. Not sure who your grandpa was, but a large majority of his administrations went to prison, too. If your grandpa is still alive, ask him how many millions EWE made....and the State lost...in the Texaco deal. Ask him how much EWE was selling video poker licenses for even before they became legalized. If he says $25K a pop, give him a blue ribbon. Ask him how many millions he made along with Judge Reggie & all the Lebanese mafia throughout Acadiana. Just mention : cigarette machine licenses ownership. Imagine all those 1000's of cash only machines.

You grandpa was “C R”? I’m asking because CR was 5 years older than EWE and was from Bossier and EWE was from Marksville. How did they meet up and graduate HS together?

He is really a decent guy. Almost anyone would like him if they meet him. Uncle Edward’s was incredibly intelligent, and I think he made his first millions by buying the mineral rights for all the state highways etc dirt cheap as no one knew why he was doing this until he went to oil companies saying I own MR to 1:200 etc of your field etc. I think state of Texas followed suit etc. Everyone now would understand that concept but almost no one did in the 60s.

Don’t blame EE for Louisiana’s issues or political corruption, those issues predate him and continued after him or have you forgotten about characters like Huey Long and Bobby Jindel? The people of Louisiana are to blame. They are the idiots that nominated David Duke too. Huey Long and the Long family, now my damn neighbors started the populist war against wealth that has been part of Louisiana political life ever since.
