The Advoate...surprise, surprise.

I take what economists say with a grain of salt because most of their "theorizing" is solely based on theoretical models.

Guess we will just have to see after the first year's operating budget.

But LSU economist Jim Richardson and Public Administration Institute Director Jared Llorens said Monday that the estimated surplus is not accurate. Their study was paid for by a new nonprofit called One Baton Rouge, spearheaded by political consultant Michael Beychok. The group paid $17,500 for the study, and Beychok said the money came from private donors.

So no bias at all in the report.

There’s gonna be bias in every report. But I’d rather give someone else a chance than let the idiots ruining Baton Rouge continue unchecked

As someone who just moved out of BR for the first time in his life (30 years), I would never move back to Baton Rouge under the current situation.

I would've taken 15k to say someone else is wrong.

I love how these reports claim that it will be catastrophic for the parish’s budget because St George will take so much of the tax revenue, then also claim that St George won’t have enough tax revenue.

I would have done it for $1 dollar cheaper than the cheapest bid.

Yeah,
I think the pension buy-outs are probably the big sticking point. I need to see the actual report for anything to be more than conjecture.
My only sticking point is I don't understand how a place can be simultaneously ostracized for being too well off and at the same time people say it won't work financially.

Baton Rouge must have the best market for “studies” in the world. Never seen a problem that hasn’t been “studied” multiple times yet the problem remains. I wonder if I can set up a studies shop and subcontract out of Bangalore India to do the work. There has to be some efficiencies to be found in the process.

Start a study to study the other "studies" and find inefficiencies.

Even more surprising to me, is that when a study is coming from private donors, it costs $17k, but when taxpayers are footing the bill, it cost over $300k

Those things are not mutually exclusive. The revenue loss can be detrimental to the city parish government and still not be enough to fully fund a separate city.

They may not be fully funded but is BR? Nope. BR is constantly trying to raise taxes. So, why is this even an issue?

"Hey if y'all vote for St. George your taxes will have to go up!" "What if we stay in BR?" Crickets.

so you are saying that the city parish government is ran so efficiently that it gives us economies of scale that work in everyone's benefit? A city parish that is so flush with money that it just paid 300k for a racial diversity study. But at the same time refuses to invest in baton rouge economic development projects.
BTW I thought all the businesses in baton rouge were making so much money and shafting the parish on taxes that the businesses didn't make any money for the parish.

Any budget put forth by SG or it's opponents is theoretical.

I'd really like to know how that SG backed budget arrived at its cost figures.

For instance: the infrastructure budget. How did they arrive at those numbers?

If they already had everything in place like school, municipal buildings, equipment, trucks, etc. in place they might. Are they planning on building their own waste treatment facilities and water company or are they essentially going to buy from BR? None of those things currently exist other than a few schools, how does St. George get started without going into massive debt right from the beginning. A lot of tax revenue would be going to pay off debt which could lead to shortages for things that come up.

I won't say that, but I don't think 17,500 is enough to do a complete study on everything.
