Why is this only the east coast ?

Is there a different union for the longshoremen in California ?

My sister dated a guy who worked the crane in San Francisco, they had a "book" they could pass down to a family member (mostly sons) and they just took over the job.

He had some crazy stories about them hiding cars and stuff in containers when they would get pissed at some shipper.

And hypodermic needles scattered all over the ship yard.

ILA vs ILWU

Gulf and East Coast = ILA
West Coast = ILWU

So are there even any negotiations taking place right now?
This will get ugly very quickly if they strike tomorrow?

Nope. Nothing that I have heard about. The railways stopped taking shipments to the ports yesterday, so pretty much anything that is on the docks now is the last thing in or out...

Heard some rumors about some captains/brokers offering major bribes to jump line in the offload schedule, but I find that hard to believe in this day and age...

I don't recall the exact number, but the east coast dock workers make about 70% what the west coast workers make. Again, I don't recall the exact number, but it is close

I find it believable depending on what the cargo is, such as something valuable and perishable or something that has to hit market soon to retain value but is otherwise a durable good.

Grease is a legitimate business expense, as you are paying to move to the front of the line rather than outright bribing them to get business.

Pay but also they want assurance that their jobs are protected from going automated.

Nothing like trying to guarantee your job isn’t automated like not showing up to work in mass

Which is probably fair? Houston, the gulf coast, and much of the east coast south of New Jersey has much lower cost of living than California.

this could be a piece of the “October surprise” that can lead to chaos if it goes on for several days even, this is NOT GOOD AT ALL! It’s the entire country’s major ports, that could be affected. you kkkw how many ships will be idle with cargo onboard or empty awaiting to load??? the financial losses will be tremendous as well.Trucking companies won’t have nothing to transport (that are tied to the ports). We export liquid and solid raw materials to go overseas and the. import the finished goods. we export food all around the world, grain, chicken etc… this will effect the entire world. you may want to educate yourself before spouting out silly crap.

Didn’t Herbert Hoover have recurring nightmares about the communist brining this country to its knees by corrupting 2 unions and implementing strikes with them:

Teamsters
Dock workers

If the ILA strikes and Biden/Harris do nothing about it, can a governor order the National Guard to man the port(s) and unload the ships??

What kind of items do you think will be impacted the most from a consumer need?
I’m sure some supplies will be ok for a while, but others I’m sure operate with a Just In Time model.

If this thing isn’t settled soon, expect some panic buying

Items that will be impacted

Coffee
Fruits- especially banana’s
Chocolate
Liquor/beer/wine
Automobiles
Lumber /plywood
Steel
Aluminum
Concrete
Lithium batteries
Clothing
Furniture
Toys

And it’ll take a while for the supply chain to get back into sync after a shutdown happens. Back in 2002, an 11 day shutdown on the west coast- took over 5 months to get back to normal.

Well we only saw about 10 seconds of a longer question and 2 seconds of what I assume was a longer response.

ILA not negotiating in good faith and using the political cycle to tax the American people. Typical union pieces of shite.

One could argue a more competent executive branch would have done more to fix this before it became an issue

I agree, but they were going to hold out until now no matter what.
