It's going to be a frigging nightmare. Customers are already panicking trying to pull cargo from ports before the strike. And in Houston the union guys are dragging their asses even more than usual.

And remember there are going to be a lot of folks caught up in this that have no say in striking.

Dockworker here. Unfortunately it is looking like it will 100% come to a strike. Anything shipped via cargo container is about to run into a gridlock. Ports from Texas all the way to Maine will strike on Tuesday. The west coast union (iwlu) has already told our union they won’t accept ships that are being diverted from our ports on strike.

Reason 1,009,292 why we should NOT be relying on imports to supply our vital goods and needs.

Think medicines like antibiotics, medical supplies and equipment and replacement components...

Think electronic components like micro-chips, electronics, auto parts, spare parts for all kinds of equipment...

So you’re entitled to their labor?

No. If they don’t wanna do their jobs for the pay then they can find a better paying job without holding the economy hostage.

That's bullshite. This is a national economic issue that should not be used for union politics.

The union was very strategic in this strike right before a presidential election. They know Biden and Harris are weak and cave to pressure.

They don't make nowhere near that amount, I know. The average is some like $100K.

I know they want $5 yearly pay increases and no automation.

Every union is different. They all run different and pay different.

Funny part is that Biden/Harris hasn't even started the process needed to implement Taft-Hartley, so we are looking at at least a few days of this at a minimum. The part people need to start thinking about is that if this drags on we are looking at the same level of supply chain disruption as we saw during COVID.

It is projected that for each day it will take 5 more days to fix the backlog. That pattern is probably only viable for 2 weeks or so. Past that, it will be even worse.

If you pull out a calendar, look at where Black Friday is, and work backward, you have about 8 weeks. Take off a week to get from warehouse to store and we are at 7 weeks or 49 days, which means more than about 10 days of stoppage and we will see a huge miss in inventory during the golden retail season. That would lead to massive misses in the 4Q in the retail sector and major chaos...

The ILA is reportedly asking for raises of $5 an hour, per year, which would be an immediate 12.8% pay hike on the current top pay of $39 an hour. Repeating that $5 an hour increase each year would result in raises totaling 77% during the life of the contract.

Not gonna lie, a 10-15% raise every year seems a bit crazy. If that gets passed I'm gonna go work for the port.

lol, it all sounds good on paper, but you'll starve for a few years until you start gaining seniority.

The only thing that may keep this from lasting months is that some of these union baws are not very good with money. Making good money but living paycheck to paycheck. And the union damn sure aren't going to make them whole.

After a few light checks they may want to get back to work.

Also don't the ports in California already have some automation?

Just stop spouting misinformation that you claimed you researched.

Never claimed I researched it. I said I've worked with those guys. Everybody konws what they make. There is a reason port machinery is being automated and remote controlled to the tune of tens of milions of dollars. I do this stuff. You don't. Stay in your lane.

Exactly. We should be manufacturing in America and purchasing American products.

People always talk about this. You have no clue how bad this would be from an increase in the cost of goods. It would make 2020-2023 look like nothing.

Yes some stuff needs to be brought back here for manufacturing (like chips, which is happening) and some medical related items.
