How did she end up in the custody of two people neither of them being her real parents? Or am I reading this wrong?
No, you’re not. Her mom got pregnant by some guy, the dude split. Her mom gets with the man who she considers her father, I’m pretty sure during the pregnancy. Her mom and her father get married, the mother leaves him and gives him custody of my SO.
The mother had a part in raising my SO (every other week and stuff like that for a few years) but now is basically out of the picture, only calls her daughter every once in a blue moon. I’ve never met the mother but from everything I’ve ever heard about her, she’s a piece of shite.

Trying to figure this out:
Your S/O's real mother married someone who wasn't the babby daddy. That person then gained custody of your S/O and remarried. Is that right?
ETA: You answered my question in the post above.

WTF? What kind of mother would just leave her child like that? Jeez.

It happens more than you would think.

My mother is the crazy one. We were on a trip and she told my SO at the time that she would never take care of a child that comes out of that witches body along with sone other terrible things. Really changed the way I view my mother and it hasnt been the same since.

This is admittedly partly my own fault, but
My wife and I went to Christmas mass once at 4PM on Christmas Eve. It just happened that Christmas was on a Sunday so this is Saturday afternoon mass. My wife and I were dressed kind of casually for a party that day (we both had jeans, I had leather boots, a button down and a sweater, and she had some equivalently casual girl clothes) and I told my wife (not catholic) it was no big deal to go to the vigil mass like that. Well, we show up and the whole rest of my family is either wearing suits and ties or dresses.
So after mass we’re just visiting with my family before we head over to my mom and dad’s for dinner, and my wife says something like ‘oh y’all look so nice I feel so underdressed.’ My mom’s deadpan response? ‘Well you dress as nicely as it is important to you.’

That's not even the worst story. She once used my wife's social security number (which she had from her growing up) and pretended she was my wife to gain access to our bank accounts.
Her arse would be in jail.

My MIL legit got pissed that I didn't tell her the day I was going to ask her daughter. Truth is I didn't know, I just waited for the right time. She would not talk to me or my wife for a week. Like her daughter had any say so in the matter.

There is little, if any, redeeming qualities about the woman save for she gave birth to my wife. Aside from that, her current situation is the culmination of a lifetime of untreated alcoholism and unresolved daddy issues that have translated into 4 failed marriages, f'd up dysfunctional adult children and only supervised time with her grandchildren. If I knew 10% of the things I have learned about her over the years before I was married, I prob would have never gone through with it just so I would not have to see such a repulsive creature in my life going forward. But I love my wife so there's that.

Sucks for you, I have great in laws.

Huge piece of garbage that’s who. I can’t thank her dad enough for raising the woman he did. In that situation, I’d imagine it’s easy for a kid to take the wrong paths but her dad raised her like she was his own blood.
Her real mom is a just 100% selfish cúnt.

My in laws were heavily involved in the drug trade in the 70s and 80s . Mostly they dealt with marijuana coming up through Mexico. They're legit now and have been for at least 2 decades, but their money came from being stupid and getting into the drug trade.

My wife is about the sweetest, non confrontational woman on the planet. She was walked over all her life by a horrible mother, yet she still loves her mother.
We were out as a large extended family at a restaurant and someone's order did not come out right. That stuff happens, and I'm not a big fan of complaining at restaurants (See movie Waiting). But she completely went off on everyone and the manager comped the entire meal for 9 people.
All I had was a $20 bill in my pocket and I sought out the poor waitress and handed it to her with my apologies. She overheard me and saw me give the money to her and started screaming at me in public for disrespecting her.
Fun times. This thread is depressing.

Served a horrible, dried out brisket for Thanksgiving dinner that had been kept in an ice chest for a 10 hour car ride.

My MIL nearly ruined surprise about my engagement. She certainly raised suspicions.
The first time I met her after wife and I just started dating she was taking candid photos of us talking - wife’s friend told her to cut it out

Dude, I'm fricking livid and all I did was read about it.
The fact that you didn't get arrested for beating that woman unconscious is true sign of your character.
I'm generally a non confrontational person but if you frick with my wife or kid, I'll kill you.
