What jurisdiction ??
I always heard that the seizure law for lack of insurance was routinely ignored by LE in NOLA. (Politicians made sure their constituents weren't inconvenienced.)
Anybody know if this is true ?

Bad advice. That location doesn’t do susp amd revocations. He’ll have to go to the main one but if he shows that he currently has insurance, they’ll let him do a pmt plan where they set it up divided by 24 months. I had this exact issue before. Listen to splitsville or whatever his name is, all of his advice so far has been 100% accurate.

He’s lucky that’s all he got, usually they take you to jail and you can’t leave until you pay the ticket in full. Also now he is going to have his drivers liscense suspended for exactly 1 year from when he committed the offense. He will be able to apply for a hardship liscense which means he can only drive to school or work.

Nah, different states have different procedures for DWLS for LE. In many states, discretion is up to the LEO. Believe it or not, booking someone into jail over a DWLS 3rd degree charge is a complete PIA for LE.
LE could impound the vehicle, again up to the LEO’s discretion. Driving without insurance is a hefty fine, usually over $600 for many states and since the OP has eluded to this being his sons first offense his license will be suspended for 90 days and will have to pay a reinstatement fee. In no way will he lose his license for a year, unless he’s a habitual offender.

I’m not saying the driving on suspended license, without insurance, etc should be overlooked, but it’s an example how Louisiana criminalizes poverty. This escalating punishments for small things become probation violations and people end up doing time for stupid stuff. It’s a drain on the system and it’s bad for society.
There has to be a better way to ensure compliance that is also socially just.
