Driving under suspended license - license & plate confiscated?

My stepson was pulled over and was driving under a suspended license for not paying insurance. The officer took both his plate and his DL — is this normal? I know they take the plate but I didn’t know they took the actual license too.

I think it happens. I saw it happen on Live PD at least.

I think it is normal, can't have a vehicle on the road without insurance

Be ready to not be able to drive for a year. No way around it.
Sucks because technically you can be drunk as piss almost kill someone and get a temp license to drive but don’t pay a ticket, get your license suspended and can’t drive for a year. Get caught in that year and I’m pretty sure it’s 2.

Why is he a deadbeat???

Yep. License isn't valid due to suspension so police take it. Plate taken because no insurance.

He shouldn't be driving without insurance, he's lucky they didn't tow his car.

Dude, thank God it wasn't his plate light. That's a K9 sniff with the quickness.

Your stepson seems kinda dumb. You sure he isn't yours?

I don’t understand - cop told me he can go Monday, pay his fines, and they’ll remove the flags on his license and return his DL & plate at that time. Why wouldn’t he be able to drive for a year?

Don't know what state he is in but:
1. Tell him to get his shite together
2. Tell him to get minimum limits insurance
3. Tell him to get his license reinstated
4. See if the DA will reduce the insurance charge to no proof of insurance and the suspended license charge to no a simple No driver's license charge.

They'll change it to a parking ticket.

In Louisiana, if you plead to driving on a suspended license, you automatically lose your license for a year. Not sure about other states. But if you can get the charge reduced, then you don't lose your license.

He should have a court date. Was he not ticketed? He will need to pay his fines tho.

Did he not get a ticket for driving with a suspended license? If not, your stepson is lucky and needs to just shut up, pay any fees, and get some fricking insurance.

Exactly. Jus sayin.....he can technically get to a DMV quick and get a duplicate license before the DMV is aware.
It’s been done before...

Mine was parking ticket, but any non moving violation will do. They'll almost never...NEVER suspend your license for a year. No matter how many driving under suspension tickets you get. I think I've had 7-8.

Yes his court date is July 24 - so you're saying he needs to go to court and the charges will be reduced?
