re: Driver dies after trailer hitch falls off truck, goes through his windshield

I was riding my Guzzi on the freeway a few ago when a tire blew on the trailer of a big rig that was in front of me.
Scared me shiteless. I could actually "feel" the soundwave like it was a mortar.
I'll never understand why the DOT allows retreads on big rigs.
Those big and heavy rubber shards left in the roadway are deadly to motorcyclists.

Friend of mine had one break while trying to pull someone out of a ditch. Damn thing shot through the air and straight through the windshield.
Luckily, no one was in the passenger seat or they'd be dead.

Man, seems like the driver is somewhat responsible for the death. If he left the pin out and the hitch fell off and went through windshield, yeah, seems he could be at fault.
What if the pin was pulled by some a-hole in a parking lot?

Yeah I always put a jacket or towel over the ropes or any cable I lift or tow so hopefully the jacket helps take some of the energy if it snaps.

I used to live off of Clinton Hwy. Could’ve been me.

How much of an a-hole do you have to be to drive around with a trailer hitch in when you aren’t hauling anything? All they’re good for is busting shins and banging into other cars in parking lots.

Watch out for container locks on flat bed trailers as well. Killed a guy in Houston 10 years ago.

this nearly happened to me several years ago. i was driving along the interstate and a work truck was in front of me. I saw something silver jumping and tumbling towards my vehicle at highway speeds skipping and tumbling. I pulled off on the shoulder of the interstate to avoid it, but it would have been roughly head height by the time i passed it.
i still wake up from sleep seeing that thing spinning towards me from time to time.

I saw a hubcap come off a car on the interstate once. I was in the right lane and so was the car it came off of. It hit the car just ahead of me in the left lane, clipped the hood, then hit the windshield. It didn't go through, but it did shoot about 20+ feet in the air.

Now I want to know how they stopped. I'm wondering if the driver maybe didn't die instantly and had a chance to stop before passing. Otherwise, if he died instantly the passenger would be stuck going highway speed with a driver who is completely impaired and no way to stop. shite is terrifying.
That passenger likely had to navigate back-to-back crisis events to stay alive.
Crisis 1: Ignore the shock of seeing your driver suddenly a faceless mass of gore.
Crisis 2: Re-take control of a vehicle barreling down the road at interstate speed.

There’s a story of a guy getting killed with a drop hitch snapping back into his vehicle when they were trying to pull him out of being stuck in the mud.
I get it that’s kinda hard to maybe think about before you really think through these things when you start dealing with the types of forces it’s required to pull a several thousand pound truck out of being stuck in the mud.

Wow. Didn't put the pin in so the ball slid out the receiver and bounced? I would have assumed it wouldn't bounce high enough to hit a windshield. That's scary insane.

yeah the family will sue the insurance company and get a hundred grand or so. if the old baw had insurance.
And the guy who didn't secure his trailer hitch, and the hitch company, and Chevrolet, and the Chevy driver's insurer, and his own insurer, and everyone listed's insurer.
It doesn't matter if the guy who got killed had insurance. It really doesn't.

Also, don't ever try to pull a vehicle out using a trailer hitch.
Father Killed in Off-Road Recovery

Father Killed in Off-Road Recovery
quote:
While many of us have likely made a recovery with a similar set-up, what happened next on that July afternoon is exactly why utilizing proper equipment is so important. After looping that chain through the recovery points on the front of the Woods’ truck, the tow strap was then attached to the assisting truck’s ball hitch. After a couple of short tugs proved unsuccessful at moving the drowned Super Duty, the pair of wheelers decided a running start was in order to break the truck free. The added stress brought on by this running start proved to be too much for the drop hitch intended for towing, shearing it off the truck in the process. The energy still built up within the static strap sent that large chunk of metal flying back towards the Woods' vehicle, where it would enter the windshield on the driver’s side. The hitch would smash through with such force that it broke the top half of the steering wheel before coming in contact with Ryan. The father of three died instantly according to his wife, with his three children behind him in the back seats, unfortunately bearing witness to the whole ordeal.

Legit. 20 years ago a friend of mine had his spare tire come out from under his truck and damage an expensive car behind him. H

I have been guilty of using the ball to loop a tow strap to....I will not in the future, thanks for the heads up.
