Happens more often than you would think. Usually it’s a trailer hitch or a hubcap.

There was an incident 7-8 years ago on I45 north of Houston where some kind of metal pin fell off of a tractor trailer. It bounced over the barricade into the oncoming lane and killed a driver who was going 70mph in the opposite direction (the pin went through his windshield and wound up embedded in his seat).

In that case the vehicle came to a stop safely on its own because the concrete barriers on the interstate are designed to slow & stop a moving vehicle. Those barriers are wider at the base where a tire would hit them.

I saw a horse kick the back door off of a horse trailer one time. Door shot off and hit the grill of an 18 wheeler. Would have been really bad if it had hit a car.

That was when I realized how strong a horse is.

This is why you use a frickin rescue strap and not a chain. At bare minimum drape a wet towel or something over the chain if that's all you have.

That's what those towels are for... protection from a snapped cable? I don't think so. I've been offshore on vessels pulling cables under load. I don't go out on deck. If it snaps on or near the vessel, it's very scary.

I was following (too close) a corvette that ran over an 18" piece of steel angle and slung it into my windshield, eye-level. It hit parallel with the windshield and bounced off. The windshield did not crack or shatter, but there was a 1" x 10" gash where the glass was turned to powder right in front of my face.

You know it’s your time to go when the grim reaper comes in the form of a trailer hitch.

The hitch would smash through with such force that it broke the top half of the steering wheel before coming in contact with Ryan. The father of three died instantly according to his wife, with his three children behind him in the back seats, unfortunately bearing witness to the whole ordeal.

Friend of mine had one break while trying to pull someone out of a ditch. Damn thing shot through the air and straight through the windshield. Luckily, no one was in the passenger seat or they'd be dead.

There was a thread on here in last couple of years describing this exact scenario. Well except there was a person in the drivers seat that was decapitated.

What a horrible and sad story.

You really never know when it's all going to end for you. Try to remember to be kind to others.

A guy I work with wife was driving home with her teenage son after a travel ball game. A lifted Dodge in the opposite lane had a wheel bearing lock up, shearing the lug studs. Wheel goes across the median, and hits the wife. She never saw it coming, because it was dark. Damn shame.

Those bowed out redneck trashy tires should be banned. Of course the 5 foot tall obese manlets would riot.

This exact thing happened to my best friend in high school, but it went through her passenger side and didn't harm anyone. I think they were on a country road, so probably not quite as impactful.

My possibility is a little more plausible.

A crawfish farm didn’t properly attach its trailer to the hitch when it sent its truck out to make deliveries. Initially there was no problem because the weight of the crawfish kept the trailer attached. Eventually the trailer broke loose and rolled into oncoming traffic and killed another driver.

It's terrible that it happened, and the only silver lining is that is wasn't a pair of truck nuts instead.

Death by teabagging.

That would have definitely been worse.
