The wife wants to get one for the kids but she wants to be able to bring it inside during cold weather and rain and even when it's hot. So basically all fricking year round.

We have a perfectly good outdoor room with heat and air that a dog could chill in when its cold or too hot and when it's raining but she wants to be able to bring it inside the house instead.

I say the only way we get a dog is if she agrees to put it in the outdoor room when the elements get to be unsafe or uncomfortable. IMO my home is for people, not dogs. I don't want a dog inside to tear up furniture, walls, ruin floors with their claws/poop/urine and plus, every single home I've ever visited with a dog inside STINKS. I don't want my home to become a mess with partially chewed/clawed furniture, walls, door frames, etc. and the smell of dog.

Am I unreasonable here? I don't mind getting one at all as long as it's an outdoor dog and we both refuse to bend on our position.

A dog will stink worse than your kids but not probably worse than your wife's arse

inside when I'm at work - not much of a burglar deterrent outside

I had to put Lexan in two doors because my Aussie would bang the glass trying to get at anyone coming up to the door.

The Jehovah Witnesses even stopped showing up.

Then train the dog and give it baths.

If you aren't going to put in the effort, don't get the dog.

People who buy dogs just to shove them outside 24/7 just shouldn't even get the dog in the first place.

See that I refuse to do. I'm sorry but if I do that then now the dog is becoming yet another thing to do each day and we have enough crap on our plate each and every day.

We're on the same page there, buddy.

Well yeah. It's a fricking living creature that depends on you for survival. It's called a responsibility.

What's the point of getting a dog if you just keep it outside all day. It's too hot here most of the year to spend time out there with it.

My dogs are inside dogs, and all dogs I have in the future will be inside dogs.

I dont think youre being unreasonable if that is your conviction, but if it is, you have to understand your wife's conviction, as well. I have an 8 week old german shephard (got him at six weeks), and he has had one accident. Look into crate training and clicker training. Not saying it isnt a bunch of extra work, it is for a couple of months, but if it is a family dog, it is worth it for them to be inside IMO. Family dogs go inside, hunting dogs go outside.

I know that and that's why I don't want one. I've got enough depending on me for survival already

If it's going to be kept outside, why even have a fricking dog?

Dogs are social animals, they need to be part of the pack.

Then train it not to. Dogs are smarter than most of their owners. They exist to please their masters. Train it to behave the way you want it to and it will.

And bath the dog once a month. It will smell better than your kids after a day outside playing in the dirt.

You sound like someone who has never had a dog. This doesn't surprise me based on the miserable picture your past posts paint of you.

The dog will do less damage and smell less worse than your kids.

Don't be a dick. Let your kids have a buddy who will die for them.

Inside dogs don't really get that dirty if they actually stay inside.

There are also certain breeds of dogs that are much cleaner/stink less/shed less.

Yep!

Conversely, if you can't take your dog outside enough during the day, keeping it in a cage while you're at work is just cruel.

lol dogs are designed to be outside. They want to be outside. I love my dogs like family, but once they are past the puppy stage, they go out.

Truth. My dogs sleep in the crates at night, but roam downstairs during the day when we're at work. I come home for lunch just about everyday too.
