Helmets have not reduced the amount of head injuries in recreational skiing

of all the people i've ever known in my life, thousands probably, who rode a bike without a helmet as a kid, i know precisely zero who had a head injury from a bike fall
The only one I know of was mountain biking and hit a tree with his head and he's paralyzed, but I think he was wearing a helmet anyway.
My kid wore a helmet when he first learned and was super sketchy. Now, he doesnt wear one, but only rides around the block. If we were to go mountain biking, sure we'd get something.

Mine did when they were young. Not anymore. Both are middle schoolers now, and still ride their bikes at least a couple of times a week.
Anytime they are outside or getting exercise is a big plus in my book. Finding their bike helmet, fitting it just right with the straps, or worrying they look stupid are all obstacles at this point that could sway them from riding their bikes, and choosing to play video games instead.

Not all who crash without a helmet and land on their head die. Some become retards and potatos. Kid I knew in grammar school had a TBI from crashing his BMX style bike. He is 35 now but has the intellect of an 8yr old.

if you are simply riding around the neighborhood or subdivision where cars do not go over 15 and you are mainly riding side walk.....yea you look like an idiot wearing a helment.
It's laughable to say a 7 or 10 or 12 year old kid would look like an idiot doing the same.

An adult that wears a helmet while biking casually in a subdivision is pathetic. If you are biking fast on high traffic areas and whatnot, fine, but just going for a normal bike ride....no.
I won't fault a parent for putting a helmet on a child. That's a parent's choice on whether the child can handle it or not, but I, personally don't require it for them either.

I don’t see a personal choice as a sign of masculinity or toughness. If you want to, wear it. If you don’t, dont.

My son always wanted to wear a helmet because I wore one and I guess he thought it was cool, which is funny because I didn't.
I am old enough to have worn leather helmets crit racing:
Modern interpretation
In the 80's I had a Look similar to this one, it was just EPS foam with a lycra cover
Now I have 5 or 6 different helmets for different types of riding.
I always wear one on the roads or mountain biking but when I am doing laps in the neighborhood I don't until the temp gets below 40. I am riding similar speeds as on the road (22-28mph) so I could definitely rock my noggin but in the neighborhood it is likely it will just be my fault and I won't get run over by a car. Not growing up with helmets I still enjoy the wind in my hair.

I'll go first: I'm 40 and have had a bike for 35+ years and have never owned a helmet
If you went on a road or mountainbike ride with me (well, you wouldn't be able to keep up) you would have wished you wore a helmet.
Dipshite.

According to the IIHS, in 2016, out of 561 bicycle deaths where the helmet status was confirmed, 424 of those deaths were with no helmet, making up 75.6% of those deaths.
If you're in a serious bike accident, which group would you rather be in?
Yeah, we should probably require the wearing of helmets when climbing a ladder or when using playground equipment, right?
Maybe just bubble wrap everyone and call it a day.
From google-
"Each year there are more than 164,000 emergency room-treated injuries and 300 deaths that are caused by falls from ladders. Falls from ladders are the leading cause of deaths on construction sites."
"Over 200,000 children across the United States receive emergency room care for playground related injuries. That is one child every 2 1/2 minutes. These falls can cause serious brain and spinal cord injuries or even death."

I'm kind of torn on this issue cos when Cru Jones and Team Mongoose rode and stunted for shits and gigs, they did so without helmets. But when they rode Helltrack, they most definitely donned gear.

We never wore helmets when I was a kid. I don't think it was even an option.
I wouldn't wear one now, if going for a casual roll around the neighborhood.

quote:I got into riding mountain bike trails for about a decade (maybe longer). If I'm on a mountain bike trail, I'm absolutely wearing a helmet, even if I'm not wearing other biker clothing (usually wore jeans, to protect the legs from all the bushes and whatnot). We've busted our asses out there a few times, I don't know that the helmet saved anything, but it didn't hurt. It probably did save a few cuts.
I don't particularly care about looking like a dork, and usually on the trails, most people are wearing a helmet and some that don't so it's not like you stick out like a sore thumb or anything.

Not wearing a helmet because you think it will make a kid tougher or look less nerdy feels like a very backwards uneducated line of thinking.
I consider a helmet risk management. When my son first started riding I made him wear a helmet as the rist of wrecking was high. Once he was old enough and proficient at riding I trusted him to make the choice if he thought a helmet was needed or not. In a way I taught him the concepts of risk management and I let him make that decision for himself. Just riding down the block to a friend's house? He may or may not put on a helmet. Doing risky stuff like jumping home built ramps? Probably puts on a helmet. Now he races mountain bikes in Enduro and XC disciplines and his choice normally comes down to full face or half shell. He's ridden enough to know wrecks often come with complacency more than difficulty and your worst wrecks can come on the easy things when you just aren't paying attention. He's 15 and he will 99% of the time choose to wear a helmet without me ever having dictated a helmet since he was 9. Educate your children and let them make the decisions for themselves.
