It’s a US issue. Only in the US are you forced to pay for an exam and contacts fitting than simply order the contacts directly without a script.
I feel like my -5.00 aren’t strong enough. I don’t need to go to a doctor to tell me that moving up to -5.5 or -6 would work better. I should be able to order that on my own.

They don’t make that much money. If they were corrupt they’d make a lot more.

All businesses care about their bottom line much more than they care about you.

If you have vision insurance, I think they can take advantage of a person because most insurances list multiple things they will pay a certain amount or percentage of and most customers don’t know what it actually applies to and doesn’t apply to. I think they can quickly add up approximately what your coverage should pay and then they add that amount back into the price. My last glasses with the exam, Aetna paid over $600 and my final portion was $670 for a pair of clear lens progressives with a $175 set of frames. So over $1200 and had to take them back 4 times to get lenses adjusted, they had them cut wrong and they were not setting in the correct position, they never got them exactly correct, no refund just sorry we’ve done all that we can do.

Is anyone far sighted other than older people that need readers?
Me. I’ve had glasses for far-sightedness since 16. It was fairly mild. Just enough to give me nagging headaches.
Right now I’m a +3. After turning 50, I also needed correction for nearsightedness. Now I wear bifocals.
I also have a cane for knee issues. I’m just waiting for the hearing aid so I can hit the old lady trifecta.

EDIT: Not sure if below chart is accurate, but it should give you an idea of the conversion from glasses prescription which is what the butterfly thing measures to contacts. Then you have to match what is closest available in the contacts. Your visit should include rechecking vision with contacts.
The chart is wrong because after -6.00, contact lenses go up by 0.50 on strength instead of 0.25. There are no 0.125 steps either. The chart conversion is accurate but the lens prescription increments are wrong.

Completely. It's a racket. There's no reason I should have to go back and pay for another exam after I wear the test contacts for two weeks and tell you the script works.
Won’t be a popular opinion but I think doctors might be more corrupt than attorney’s and they are playing with your health.
Use Covid as your proof for how easy it is for even your friends who are doctors to fricking become sellouts.
I hate sellouts more than I hate anything else. Slaves.

Last time I went, the upfront girl was cold calling everyone on their phone list to solicit appointments.

The always force me to buy new frames. I can never use old frames with new lenses.

You sound like patients who think that their body has become resistant to Viagra but really it's that their uncontrolled hypertension and diabetes made their ED worse since their last visit.

lol what? Your optometrist has you "test drive" your new prescription? I have never done that or heard of such a thing in my 42 yrs. I go in, do the eye test, get my prescription print out and they give me a new set of lenses on the spot based on the new prescription. I order a couple of boxes to my house, and go on with my life. What you're talking about is absurd.
I’ve been test driving my new lenses for over a decade.
The reason is they want you to feel for comfort. The prescription stays the same if you don’t like it. They just change the brand/model.
It’s been the standard practice at Berkeley Eye Center in Houston for as long as I can remember.

Get an appointment with an Ophthalmologist. They’re a step up from an Optometrist
I see both. Optham about once every 6-8 weeks. they really aren't set up to give prescriptions; I think they like to let the Optoms do that.
the vision in one eye changes weekly, if not daily. the prescription may work for a few weeks then zilch. I usually get the on line glasses, if I even bother. I know the optoms don't like it but I can get 3-4 pair on line for the price of one in their office.

No surprise....you're in a big city where they can get away with that nonsense.
Maybe don't change brands every time you visit, just a thought. When I found the ones I'm currently wearing, I stuck with them. Zero reason to change. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's dumb.

There are corrupt people in every field.
Optometrists are less corrupt than most, in my experience.

FWIW I've read that the guy who invented(?) the LASIK procedure has joined with some others and have a developed a booth or some enclosure that will do all the 1...or 2? 2....or 3? automatically.
I've always thought that that was something that lent itself to automation.
