I grew up hearing "always see an opthalmologist (MD) rather than optometrist until I found out how rigorous optometry training has become. Training is now 8 years, 4 college + 4 optometry school. Some universities like UAB offer both specialties. I do have a long-stable neurological condition which I trust an optometrist to monitor.

There is a certain level of salesmanship involved with optometry, especially private practice. More so than in other areas of medicine because so much of it is not covered by insurance.

On the other hand though, most ophthalmologists would rather be doing glaucoma and cataract surgery all day than checking vision and managing dry eye.

It's weird to me that something as vital as vision is treated so strangely compared to regular medicine.

I don’t know if they’re corrupt but I know every time I walk into one it’s a $500 bill for a new pair of glasses so I guess it wouldn’t surprise me
