I never understand why teachers grade papers at home. Make shite multiple choice and run it through the scantron machine
Because you can't use a scantron anymore, a test has to have multiple parts including a writing.

For writing assignments like grading essays, grade them in class while the students have a reading assignment or something.

Because a teacher will get in trouble if they're not walking around observing the students as they read. Sitting at a desk is a quick way to receive a write up, especially for an extended period of time

If teachers are bringing home papers to grade everyday, they are assigning too much work and not doing enough teaching.

you mean they're doing what the district requires which is more than what schools required 10-15 years ago

Teachers are like vegans

It's a reasonably noble life choice, but we hate them because we hear about their fricking martyrdom constantly

Truth.

I was a teacher for a few years, it was both the easiest job I've ever had in some ways and the hardest in other ways. You have to prepare your butt off. Imagine giving a 2-hour powerpoint every day. How long does it take you? 5 mins. Yeah, that PP is gonna suck and those high schoolers are gonna run you. And it's different every day. Some teachers have multiple preps so that's multiple classes to prep for every day.

While this becomes easier, newer teachers have to really prep during non-teaching hours, i.e. at home.

As someone who worked in industry before teaching, I did often laugh at some of the things teachers complained about. But during the school year, and school week, teachers are working their butts off.

That being said, I worked a second job on the weekends and during the summer because when you're not prepping or at school there's not shite to do.

In every thread you act like this is exclusive to teachers. The difference is everybody does that, but when teachers do it it gets them ALMOST to the regular workday of everyone else.

Bingo.

I can't tell you how many 15-16 hour days I've had. Even logged a 20 hr day and a 100 hr week. Still expected to show up the next morning at the normal time, and received no additional money for it. You do what needs to be done.

It seems they would have the opportunity to pickup a 2nd job over the summer f

in my experience (MIL is a teacher) they don't get summers off like many think. They still have shite to do throughout the summer. Idk. I do get sick of them bitching, though. She seems miserable half the time yet has done this job for 30 years. Just do something else if the bureaucracy and pay make you so unhappy.

I think he didn't include the amount of time that teachers are expected to work outside of school hours and also the supplies that teachers are expected to come out of pocket for their classes.

If teachers, and schools, wanted to work more they could offer before and after daycare services for serious dollars. They don't want to work more, they just want to be given the dollars.
