Probably not me. I work for a private school. Maybe I should have disclosed that before my opinions :-)

It’s easy to make comments when you aren’t held down by a school board.

Iberville Parish is horrible... The students are low, the adminstration is lost, and the school board has just discovered a focus. They have to pay to attract teachers because no one wants to work in the area.

Oh. Well she used to teach private school. It’s neither here nor there. I won’t eat you out to the school board.

The students more so, which is why they dumped over 1 million into Iberville Elementary as a Montessori School.
Before they just let MSA carry them

I’ve found that teaching all depends on your mindset.
Last year I was ungrateful.
This year I’m having the time of my life. I’ve got no complaints with my $50k, and I sure as won’t tomorrow when I wake up at 8:00 to brew coffee and read a book.
Nor when I spend 40 days in Colorado this summer and get a free trip to Europe (for being a teacher).

My kid is going on a trip to Europe this summer for school. I wonder if it’s the same program.

I am a teacher and coach my club swim team. For those unfamiliar, club swimming is pretty hardcore. Solid pay ($30k) and solid hours around 20/week average. Between the two, make $80k. I Airbnb heavy on the side.

I’m always grateful :-) there are some amazing perks. Both in the classroom and on vacation.

I just look around sometimes and wish people would be held to higher standards. Honestly-for the betterment of the kids, and the school.

I know a shite ton of teachers as my wife is one.

None of them have second jobs. Unless you count shite like having an Etsy shop or MLM schemes

There needs to be a better way to grade teachers. I had a few really good ones that I would credit with helping me on the right path. They were not paid much though. And then there were a crapload of shitty ones who didn't even deserve to be paid what they were getting.

The best way is based on how students grades + test scores + behavior improved from year to year. The issue is some teachers will avoid certain grades/discipline because they will thing it means a raise

Well, they do have a clientele. Why not ask the kids who are trying to learn (it's not hard to pick them out) who taught them. That's all you have to ask.

always said teachers should get raises based on preformance. I was told there's no way to evaluate teachers.

Absolutely asinine

And it doesn’t even have to tie back to kids test scores. Admin generally know which teachers go the extra mile. It doesn’t just have to be test scores.

In the business world there are often very subjective things that an employee can be measured on yet they’re still able to figure out how to pay high achievers more. Education shouldn’t be any different.

Ideally you could have different pay bands based on experience and education level to start. Teach a core subject like math or science and that bumps you up in the band. Show lots of dedication and strong work ethic that bumps you up in a band. Get great feedback from kids, parents, or other admin bumps you up in the band. Volunteer your time at out of school events bumps you up in a band. Take a leadership role in your team bumps you up in a band.

I did driver education every summer for twelve years. I stopped when the girl I was with decided to merge under the 18 wheeler. It was an 8am to 8pm job Monday through Thursday...Friday through Sunday was a little more manageable with only 4 to 8 hours being required. I also worked for a produce company that required me to report at 2am and deliver until 7am (I worked both of those jobs simultaneously for two of those years). Lastly, I have been a tour guide for trips overseas for the last 13 years. Oh yes, I also coach and my workdays in season = 12 hours on the light days and 18+ on the really tough ones. That covers Monday through Saturday (I sleep a good bit on Sundays) from October through February. All of that being said, I love my job. The money is a livable wage but if I want to have some extra change in my pocket, it's time to work some more jobs. It is what it is. To be fare, while I love my job, I would never recommend the profession to someone just starting out. Just my .02 my friends.

You can’t ask kindergartens to rate their teachers. That probably wouldn’t work even reasonably well until middle school at best.
