You have to prepare your butt off. Imagine giving a 2-hour powerpoint every day. How long does it take you? 5 mins. Yeah, that PP is gonna suck and those high schoolers are gonna run you. And it's different every day. Some teachers have multiple preps so that's multiple classes to prep for every day.

It's the same information year after year. You should already have these notes and powerpoints on file.

There is a lot of ignorance in this thread...

And the teachers are having to watch their ignorant kids all day for them

Of any profession, teaching would be my last choice because the pay and benefits blow, paycheck spent on classroom decorations, and my God some of these parents raise fricktards.

ETA: forgot to mention how hilarious it is that we want teachers to work second jobs and some want them armed in the classroom. Teach/flip burgers at night all while locked and loaded

I've taught ELA and Social Studies for 6 years in Louisiana.
ELA has gone through 5 different curriculums and Social Studies 3. While I'm teaching the material each requires how I teach it differently, so I have to teach it differently.
Example: one may want me to focus on the causes of the Revolutionary War, another has me discuss both sides of the war.
Simliar but they both require me to teach differently

If teachers are bringing home papers to grade everyday, they are assigning too much work and not doing enough teaching.

When it takes 30 min to an hour to grade a paper, there isn't enough time to do it during the school day. My mom did this for years while she taught.

Not true at all. My wife has had to redo her lesson plans ever year. The district adopts a new method; they change. New TEKS implemented; everything changes. Your principal get a wild hair up her arse and wants to try something new; they change. The days of turning in the same work and plans are long gone. While the activities may remain the same they do have to be completely adjusted to conform to the new and ever changing standards.

Thanks. I'm asking because I don't know - Is it the politicians or educators that make the decision to change the way in which you approach the same subjects every year?

Mom did summer camps. I helped her for a few years in HS and she helped me pay for LSU with the extra money made.

Somewhat plus a Parish can receive funding from a particular group to try a new curriculum so the Parish is not paying for the books/materials and it last usually two years. Once over the Parish will look for something new so that they do not have to pay for the materials.

I respect teachers for what they do, I'd never want to do it. But to act like they work their arse off is just as dumb as the people that think they don't do anything. Let's say they have to work an hour or two after school everyday (they don't), that puts them pretty much at a regular workday for everyone else. They still get summers and all of those holidays off. And they can't bitch about the pay or lack of raises. You know exactly how much you're going to make going in. My sister is a teacher, she has to deal with shite head kids all day, but she also can make all of her kids practices/games/programs. Her pay is about right for what the job entails, and she'd tell you that.

I've already stated most work 35 hour weeks then schools require them to be on campus 30-45 minutes early for meeting/conferences. Then most stay 1-2 hours a few days a week, now you are over 40+ hours a week.

Addressed already, imagine your job only gives a 100 dollar raise each year yet requires you to work more hours each year and do more work, then there is no yearly bonus for being above your peers.....
Now you will say find a new job then they would have no quality teachers anywhere because the quality do it and accept it while going through legislation hoping for a chance.

lol if I made my kids do games I would be written up, it sounds like she is a shitty teacher

This isn't unique to teachers, it's pretty much all government employees. The only thing is the promotions. And again, and I'm not saying its fair, but you knew what you were signing up for.

I'm talking about her children, like the ones she birthed.

Again, I really do respect what teachers do. I've heard the stories about the kids and parents. My point is I think the compensation is pretty fair for what the job entails.

Never complained about teacher pay. In fact earlier I said my wife makes decent money. With that said, it all depends on where you teach and what stipends you get from taking on extra duties. With regards to summer, she gets exactly 9 weeks off. In those 9 weeks she has 30-40 hours professional development that is spread across 3-4 weeks. I don't know anything about your sister or where she teaches, but I do know my wife's work ethic and she does put in her hours. Typically 8-10 hrs a day at school (6:30-4:30) and 2-3 hrs a night (excluding Fridays).

Curious as to what you allude to, from.the time I've started till today the district has added enough for me to work extra each week. I did not sign up for that.

if they received raises like normal jobs I'd agree, however they don't. It isn't like normal jobs and I know this is limited but the government workers I know get a better raise each year and a bonus based on performance

My wife has gotten a decent raise the last couple years but they are mainly due to the nearby districts competing for decent teachers.

Again, not that it's fair, but I don't think this is unique to teachers either. I'd say that it's true for most profesions.

I just think teachers bitch a lot. Not all of them of course. Every job has shite that's not ideal, but they don't all come with 12 weeks off for US median income.

again other professional people I know who have government jobs have received raises that make mine look pathetic. Some with added work, some without.... If I'm added 10 hours of extra work a week and I received a 200 dollar raise over two years is 200 worth the extra 20 hours a week?

as I've stated already the OT is more people vitching about teaching than teachers bitching about work.
