Do you know any teachers who work a 2nd job?
Posted by texag7 on 4/4/18 at 12:53 pm2560
I was listening to the micheal berry show the other morning while driving. One of his callers was explaining when you calculate how many hours teachers work it comes out to something like $44/hour on avg.
Yet all you hear is how they complain about not getting paid enough.
It seems they would have the opportunity to pickup a 2nd job over the summer for added income if they wanted (unless they aren't allowed to?)...Even at something basic like $10 or $12 per hour that is $5-6k more in their pockets
If they want more money, work more
Thoughts?

I have multiple teacher friends:
Three work as a travel ball coach
One owns a T-Shirt company
One owns a lawncare service
One flips houses each Summer
One drives for Uber
Numerous delivery drivers
One builds custom cabinets

One of my girlfriend's friends was complaining how much she works as a teacher because sometimes she has to grade papers at home. I had just gotten off of 2 months of 7/12s with a fatigue day every other sunday. I couldn't roll my eyes much further back.

Facebook blew the frick up yesterday over that. It was calculated based on teachers working 6 hours per day for only 9 months out of the year, which is just a little bit disingenuous.
Anyone who thinks that the vast majorities of teachers work only 6 hours per day just isn't being intellectually honest.

I knew a teacher who did. He worked special ed with a masters degree which paid a little more than a regular teacher, and summers and some weekends he worked event bartending. He got to a point he was making more part time in the booze business than his teaching career, so he quit and went full time into booze a couple years ago. Total waste of a bachelor and masters degree at this point.

I am less concerned about the average salary (which, for public school teachers, is about $59,000/year - right around median income for Americans) than I am about the ridiculous retirement schemes in most states.

When I was in school, the teachers would lobby the kids to lobby the parents to vote for the raises/millages. In third grade, they sent home forms for the parents to sign stating that they would vote in favor. My Dad refused to sign, explaining to me his opposition to property taxes as inequitable. I explained that to my principal, who punished me for a week. I shite you not.
Couple buddies are teachers.. They umpire softball/baseball during the summer making extra cash. Have another that mows yards. They enjoy those things and make a few extra grand during the summer doing it
