Do people react irrationally when gas prices rise?

Let's say gas goes up $1 per gallon.
If the average American drives 15k miles a year (high end), and the average vehicle gets 25 MPG (low end), that's about 50 gallons of gas consumed per month.
That's an extra $50 a month, an extra $12.50 per week. It seems like people blow more than $50 a month on all types of dumb crap.
Obviously rising fuel prices drives everything else up, but I'm speaking more to those focused on what they're paying at the pump.
And yes, I know some of you drive vehicles that get 13 MPG or whatever.

The average American is poor as shite. They can't afford an extra $50/month for anything.

I don’t pay for my gas so I couldn’t care less.
Posted on 5/3/26 at 8:22 pm to Darth_Vader
Oh you pay for fuel in one way or another.

If price goes up 25%, they just drive 25% faster so they don't spend more on gas.

I punched my wife in the face once gas got over $3.00. Not sure if that is irrational or not.

I don’t, but I’m not a poor.

I get it but that doesn't seem to keep them out of restaurants or coffee shops or anywhere else

Fuel prices affect near everything else.
But yeah, people losing their shite over an extra dollar or two per fill up is kinda wild.

I have to fill up my tank every 4 or 5 days. In January, that was $300 a month. Now, it's $450.
Yes, it's a problem, and it's weird that you have to ask.

As long as they can charge it on a card and pay.for it later they will.
Doesn't mean they can afford it. Just means they can charge it.

It sounds like you're doing quite a bit more driving than the average person.
Still, $150 a month is basically going out to dinner a couple of times. Or a pair of decent shoes.

What normal every day guy isn't buying a "decent pair of shoes" every month.
Just admit it is fricked up. That is ok to admit.

Somehow I don’t believe the masses are that poor. Most are just angry that they have 50$ less of money for stupid bullsh!t that they don’t need.

Idk. I just remembered I voted for a guy who said if he became president, gas prices would go down. Now they’re far worse than they were before…
