It's all "fricked up", but gas prices are pretty far down the list.

Most of the people complaining about this extra $50 a month are paying $500-1500 a month car payments. Make it make sense.

That’s why they elected the “make shite cheaper, don’t start new wars that raise the price of gas” guy

You underestimate how poor people are. Americans in general are living on a thread.

They don't want to pay that much. That is just what a car costs these days.

Hate saying it but you wouldnt put your wife and kids in a 15 year old car that still costs 25K and may break down.

Even then the car is +$100 to fill up at these prices.

Probably closer than a lot of us would like to admit.

And the ones closest to poverty are the least likely to realize it.

What does gas have to do with what someone pays for a car?

You can’t be fricking serious. Out of curiosity, how many rolls of “I did that” stickers did you buy and stick to pumps?

What 15 year old car costs $25k? Also, I see plenty of "new cars" breaking down these days.

For the record, I daily drive a 2011 and my wife drives a 2016, so I live in this space. We've never been stranded.

I don't understand how folks spend hundreds of dollars a month on random luxuries, but freak out when gas eats an extra $50.

It seems irrational.

You cannot POSSIBLY think the only impact gas prices have for a person is the amount they spend on a tank of gas. It has a direct impact on energy bills, food, clothing, and just about everything else you pay for.

I’d be shocked if you were not complaining about gas prices and inflation during the last administration.

Gas prices fluctuate. It is a part of life. But the people that rationalized higher prices four years ago are complaining about them now. And the people complaining four years ago are rationalizing them now. It is comical how people’s opinions completely change on the exact topic depending on who is in office.

I don't really consider myself any certain class, I just live within my means and try to build long term wealth.

bullshite, the poorest Americans are better off than most of the world. That's also why America is $39 trillion in debt.

I understand why the cost of gas is a critical measurement, but I can't say I've paid attention to the ebss and flows of the price of a gallon since I got a real job.

I addressed that in the OP

Not really, I WFH and am reimbursed for any business driving I do so I probably drive quite a bit less (on my own dime) than the average American.

I probably took the long way around but that's my point.

I understand why fuel prices should bother us. I don't understand why the average American freaks out about having to pay a few extra dollars at the pump. Then they go spend $20 in the store on drinks, snacks, tobacco, etc.

I doubt the average American is looking at fuel prices and thinking about the long term effects on shipped goods.

Probably because it is the most relatable metric.

"I don't care about gas prices" is true for anyone making over 50k per year.

Truth is that we are getting fricked on every other metric related to fuel prices but too proud to realize it because it makes us sound poor to complain about fuel surcharges and prices.
