I think the average ACT for admission is a 30, so at least it goes to the smsrt friends and family....

Have a friend who got it for one year . Not sure what he did after that. Maybe the only 144 kids from Louisiana who actually go there

Already up to 6 people (including spouses/friends) in only 3 pages. Once again, OT is the elite of the elite

Tulane was a public school originally. Which is where this “tradition” began.

Yep. Specifically, Tulane was (and still is) the University of Louisiana.

In fairness, there have been thousands of these scholarships dished out and the requirements seem reasonable so it's not a shock that it was possible for people here to attain.

The more surprising part is how many people apparently even knew about it in high school. My dumbass counselors barely knew how to apply to LSU, much less knew about some ancient free ride tickets to Tulane passed on through state legislators.

Tulane was public (The University of Louisiana. Sorry Ooh La La) and when they decided to go priviate, part of the deal was these scholarships would be a trade off of Tulane staying tax exempt. Some Nola officials have them too.

Frankly, I'm more shocked that there are 6 of us smart enough to get in.

Yeah, this is old news. Really came out when incompetent New Orleans Mayor Sidney Barthelemy (NOLA mayor gets one, too) gave his to his SON and stupidly put it in a listing of all scholarships awarded to Brother Martin grads, as in "Sidney Barthelemy, Jr. - Mayor's Academic Scholarship to Tulane University."

Who you be? I was in Sidney's class. He was an alright dude.... felt sort of bad for him.... should have been a little more discreet.

Are all of our state legislators still getting FREE LSU tickets, too?

Twenty some years ago, it was a major kerfuffle in New Orleans because so many of the scholarships were going to family members of the guys who chose who to give the schollys to.

So much publicity then, but maybe it didn't go statewide.

Most go to someone for sentimental reasons - kid from the legislator's high school or church, for example.

The recipients are a matter of public record. That was one of the reforms in the 1990s after Barthelemy gave a mayoral scholarship to his idiot son who had to enroll in University College just to get in.
