We had 2 variations back in the mid 70s. “Kill the man with the ball” and “Knock ‘em down John”. In the first, there was a ball involved. In the second, no ball..everyone just tried to knock everyone else to the ground, with the winner being the last kid standing. Rough and violent fun.

We called it fumble rumble.
We also had a game called dead ball when we had to have recess in the gym (if it was raining). Kinda like dodgeball but there were no teams or boundaries. 1 tennis ball wrapped in duct tape to make it hurt and you can’t run with the ball. Last man standing wins

We played all kinds of dangerous games. Dirt clod fights, bottle rocket fights, bike ramp jumping into cardboard boxes and full speed tackle football. But the one where we got beat up the most involved tournament style street boxing with boxing gloves, although injuries were frequent playing football full speed without pads as well.

They call it, "find out who the retard is" because everyone has Ring doorbell cameras.

Our elementary school tried to ban it after a gruesome femur fracture. It just seemed to become more popular
If it had been the former, I’m sure there would have been a[n attempt to] ban.

Absolutely. Also played a ton of lawn darts and I’m here to tell the tale.
Don't forget clackers!

We called it "Smear the Queer", "Rumble" and "Kill the Guy with the Football"...
This was a private school near Tampa.
And we would be pretty dirty by the end of recess....
ETA - this was in the late 70s. HS class of 81

The recess monitors in elementary school in the 70’s just watched with amusement.
