you see a kid collapse like that, or start acting goofy, get them in an ice bath ASAP and then get them to the hospital once they are cool. Unless the kid is pulseless in which case it’s probably a primary cardiac issue and you should do CPR. This situation sucks. It usually happens from a failure to recognize the signs of heat stroke and then a failure to act with immediate cooling PRIOR to transporting to the hospital

Exactly.. When he quit sweating and started puking SOMEBODY should have known what was going on. What a tragedy.

And you are adding to the rumor mill. If you know for a fact what happened that’s one thing. But the “I heard” stories” aren’t needed out of respect to all involved.

better yet go ask coach beard in person

This is sad, I saw it on the news this morning and I truly felt for this mother. This is cliche to say, but it is true. It is something no parent should have to do.

Unfortunately then it sounds like the trainer and/or the EMTs failed this young man, if the reports that he arrived at the hospital with with a temperature of 106F are correct.

Everything done by Coach Beard and his staff is done the right way, save your rumors for gossip hour. This is a tragic event, one any coach or parent would hate to

I hope they can prove that without a doubt. And if not I hope he never coaches anything but the grass on how to grow for the rest of his life.

Livingston Parish schools have a policy of not allowing any extracurricular activities on days when schools are closed because of weather. I've know of coaches that have gotten in trouble with the school because they had students at the school when the school was closed because of weather so how were they even having football practice on Tuesday morning when the school was closed due the Hurricane Sally?

Seems like everything was done correctly. He made it through practice, then said he felt funny afterwards and laid down. Trainer was there immediately, and they called 911 as a precaution before he even passed out. they were helping him back to the fieldhouse and he collapsed there. Ice bath was performed. It is a tragic for sure, but I don't know what more you expect the trainers and staff to do so please don't turn this into blaming the coaches or staff. Prayers for the family and all involved.

Who are you mad at? You know someone isn’t always to blame, it was a tragedy and I’m sure all that were there and involved are hurting enough right now.

A kid died. Why don’t we prove everyone did everything right before we white knight for these people. If they didn’t then they need to be held accountable.

This used to happen a lot more when I was younger. Not just to high school athletes but college and pro.

Also was one of the reasons they decided ephedra was so bad for you.

i’m sorry, but shouldn’t the coaching staff know the signs of heat stroke?

How do we know they didn't? We don't know any facts about how any of this played out, so it might be good just to quit speculating on all of this.

Its easy to make assumptions without knowing the whole story, but whatever happened I am sure the coaches & trainers did what they thought was best for the young man.

But Highschools don't have the quality of trainers that colleges and pros do. Every time I go to a HS football game I think about that. My nephew plays for a small catholic school and their trainer is a volunteer who is a physical therapist.

Because I think they are required to have one at practices and maybe workouts as well, they have a student trainer (college student). But HS students are more at risk than college of pro players because of the amateur level of trainers, etc that are available.

Lack of sweating isn’t even reliable. You see that more frequently in classic heat stroke, where old people get killed in heat waves. Exertional heat stroke is a slightly different animal. Pointing to a athlete and thinking they don’t have heat stroke because they are still sweating is what ultimately killed Korey Stringer of the Vikings.

Also to people saying it wasn’t hot, humidity is more important than the actual temperature, because once you get past 70% you lose evaporative cooling.

Highschools also don't have athletes that understand their bodies as well as they do in college and in the pros. By the time they are in college almost every athlete has had a "oh shite I am not bulletproof" moment.

Wearable tech is starting to make inroads into defining a persons readiness for exertion. You are going to see more of this in the future if the teams are funded well enough.
