Seems like everything was done correctly. He made it through practice, then said he felt funny afterwards and laid down. Trainer was there immediately, and they called 911 as a precaution before he even passed out. they were helping him back to the fieldhouse and he collapsed there. Ice bath was performed. It is a tragic for sure, but I don't know what more you expect the trainers and staff to do so please don't turn this into blaming the coaches or staff.

Guidelines for treating heat stroke victims:
If you see an individual suffer EHS, a common action plan would include removing all equipment and excess clothing before cooling the athlete as quickly as possible (within 30 minutes) through whole body ice water immersion—while calling 911. Once body temperature has reached 102°F (38.9°C), it is safe to transport the athlete to the hospital.

Again if he was transported to the hospital and at 106F when he arrived, the trainers and EMT did not do everything correctly. It sucks for them but it also sucks for the young man that passed away.

Cooling him down was the most critical thing they could do, ahead of calling 911 and getting him to the hospital. Hopefully this will raise awareness for the risks that exist in S LA for this to happen.

Your body must be hydrated before you start, especially in these high temp high humidity days. You cannot play catch up with staying hydrated. You have to intake sufficient fluids the night before so that they can be absorbed by the body. Its a slow process.
This. Learned this growing up on a hay farm and continue to learn it as a telephone man climbing through attics during the summer. If you ever let your body run out of fluids, it takes an extended period to get it filled back up. Right now, I go to bed with a coconut water bottle by the bed that I go through over the course of the night, and then I drink 15oz of straight H2O from the tap at every restroom trip (which necessitates even more restroom trips which leads to even more water intake).

On those rare days when I'm returning after several days off work, if I don't start hydrating the day before, the first day back in the field is going to s-u-c-k.

Also to people saying it wasn’t hot, humidity is more important than the actual temperature, because once you get past 70% you lose evaporative cooling.

Yeah, and if this was a morning practice due to school being off, then humidity would be much worse In terms of evaporative cooling than a practice at 4:00 in the afternoon.

Is there a medical condition that could account for that rise in temperature?

Doubtful that it’s anything other than heat stroke. As someone said earlier, this is not a basketball player collapsing due to a heart issue.

While this is true at most high schools, this isn’t the case at Denham high. Their trainer is one of the most reputable in the state. He spent multiple years at ULL on their training staff as well. Unfortunately in life, you can do everything right and still have an outcome like this. We still don’t know all of the facts, and honestly, probably never will. It sucks for everyone involved. The one thing I think most people can agree on is, not a single coach or trainer went out there and planned to have this happen. They reacted to the situation as best they could. If that turns out that it was handled incorrectly, then that’s a different story. Nobody on this board was there, so nobody knows what signs were being shown and when they were being shown. Prayers to the family and community!

Does anyone know if this kids dad is named Eric? I know an Eric Hildalgo from Central that very easily couldn’t have been his dad based off the ages and looks. I have not read a thing about this kids dad for some reason. Just wondering.

I coach youth football and last season we had a boy who didn’t bring a water bottle to a game in Sept when it was really hot. He had to pee at halftime the week before so his dad punished him for it. I felt terrible so I gave him a Gatorade I had. I’ve passed out before when it wasn’t even super hot because I got over exerted I guess. It’s not fun.

WTF his dad punished him for having to pee so he didn't give him water?

Yeah, some people are so dumb they can’t help it. That is a good thing that you are hydrated and go pee during halftime

Yeah his dad was strict as hell and when he saw him leave the field to go pee he got mad. The bathroom was far away and he wasn’t back on the field when the 2nd half started. So the next game he wasn’t allowed to have a drink.

Some prescription medications can decrease or stop sweat output therefore decreasing the body’s ability to cool properly. Without sweat it doesn’t take much activity or high heat to have a heatstroke.
