I honestly thought that more of the west coast of Africa is below the equator. My bad. It seems that it's not impossible for one to cross the equator and frequently the outer walls of a storm do but very rare for the eye to.
Also rare for hurricanes to form near the equator adds to the unlikelyness of one crossing it
