Looks like HWRF will take it in just west of Vermilion Bay.

How much impact will tropical storm gamma have on pulling this storm more west?
Not a whole lot overall. It could see a temporary shift in direction, but the overall steering features (HP Ridge to the NE & an LP trough to the west) has it pretty hemmed in, as far as *drastic* shifts either way go.
Drastic meaning that it isn't likely to head to Houston or Mobile.

I’m not seeing a whole lot of chatter about storm surge. What’s the threat from this storm, wind and rain and tornados?

Just the general rule that a high end Cat 4 or 5 weaking on approach to landfall will have a broad wind field and large eye that will push a lot of water.

If we have to deal with another hurricane, couldn't it at least have the decency to come during the day?

No one should be worried about BR or NOLA at this point except loosing electricity for a few days.
Wha?? Yes obviously the affects would be less but you are minimizing a tad much.

I love the crank calls that come in during the storm. My favorite was, “Nonk T calling cause he’s worried about his birds. He been seeing dem white-caps in his birdbath.”

Would Toledo bend be a good spot out of the weather or go to Houston?

I think you'd be fine in Toledo Bend based off the current information.
