Scruffy was rewatching Band of Brothers yesterday. Great fricking show.

Question is, would you rather be a part of the airborne parachute assault or the marine landing assault?

There was a total of ~2500 airborne casualties and 10,000+ casualties involved with the landings.

Now, for reference, there were 13,000 paratroopers and ~156,000 soldiers landing on the beaches.

Pretty sure those numbers are right.

So, which invasion tactic would you rather be a part of?

Id rather get shot fighting than wading through waist deep water or barbwire so I'll go airborn

But the real answer is I'd rather be in the navy blasting shells at the pill boxes

Looks like you have a better chance of surviving the landings, I'll go with that choice

Not knowing the numbers, I would have said airborne in a second, just the visions of troops not making it out of the landing craft run through my head, getting mowed down.

I wonder what the numbers are regarding first waves versus 2nd, 3rd etc

What a shite sandwich of a choice. Get blasted out of the sky and scattered behind enemy lines or get mowed down on a beach before you can even fire at the enemy. Incredible what those guys did.

The thought of running up that beach into that kind of fire. Airborne.

Marine

I think most marines walked onto the beaches without much resistance.

Some stretches the bombing didnt clear the defenses well, thats where you get saving private ryan shite

I don’t think any Marines landed on the beaches on D-Day

Some of the beach landings were relatively low casualty. See Utah Beach. The bad spots in Omaha were horrendous though.

pretty sure the airborne had by far the highest casualty rate of the entire army during the european war

would definitely rather be one of the infantry landing on the beach

That really doesn’t make either choice appetizing.

I don't think hardly any, if at all, got blasted out of the sky, but I'm not an expert. But they did have to fight tanks with rifles

Meant as a reference to tactic, not group.

Couldn’t think of a better way to phrase it.

Beach landing. That survival rate looks much better
