It's almost hot as summer out there. Crawfish should be coming in soon.

I'm sure, but you've got loads of folks here who are going to be mad at you for not hiring U.S. born citizens, despite the fact you won't get hardly any willing to work the crawfish fields short of paying them at least $40/hour.

Yep.
Even if he were to pay $30 an hour, he would get a lot of meth heads and generally losers who won’t show up half the time or show up until the first check and then disappear.

Yep.

I watched for years in Acadia Parish the hired Hispanic workforce for a couple larger farmers (rice, potatoes, crawfish), and those workers are some of the nicest you'd meet. Mostly keep to themselves, but never hear of reports of criminal activity, etc.

The farmers would provide them transportation on a school bus to head into down once or twice a week to get groceries, they house them, and those workers are on their bikes or walking along a two lane highway to get to headquarters before 5am in the mornings.

You'd think with free housing and transportation, you'd get loads of Americans looking for work to at least get on/back on their feet lining up for such work, but there's not. So personally, I have no problem with the immigrant labor as long as they've gone through the legal work visa process.

They disappear when you pay them and don’t show back up until they are out of money.

The few restaurants I’ve seen selling are selling them for $10-$11lb.
And selling out early too. Strange.

Why is it strange. This is the way it is every year this early in the season. Any restaurant or boil market that gets a few sacks will sell out early. No supply.

And then people on the OT bitch about the price

even if the normal amount of H2A workers were here the price would still be high because its January 3 and the supply of crawfish is never high on Jan 3rd and nobody can magically make it better

Water is low. Not good for catching them. When the snow starts to melt up north and begins to make its way down here it will help things out, prices will start to go down. I have craw fishermen in my family. I just repeat what I hear from them.

Last week I heard someone tell one if the craw fishermen one of the dumbest things I think I ever heard someone say. Dude says "yall talk about when the snow melts up north and how that causes the water to rise, but I think some of that is in yall head. You ever took snow and put it in a cup? When it melts its really not as much water as you would think".

That’s only for the basin and matters very little in the crawfish market nowadays
