They have 1000s of people all over these towns with no jobs but if you went and offered them this job not many would accept it an the ones that did would probably quit after a few days

It sounds like they have more crawfish than they can peel. If they can’t peel ‘em, sell ‘em to the public cheaper and we can peel and eat.

Triple the minimum wage but the mouthbreathers on here and on facebook are too stupid to do any kind of research into H2B visas

You are assuming they were legal.

But, I thought Americans would do this jobs?

Not at criminal alien wage rates. I don’t live in a house with 23 other criminal aliens. My rent is a little higher.

They are legal. Many of the farmers and processors hire the same people year after year.

Starvation is a great motivator. When that is removed, everything breaks down.

This. We need to slowly ween people off welfare benefits. Cut the welfare budget 10% per year. 10 years it’s gone. They will work when their bellies are growling. We support lazy MFers way too much.

It's not even the money to support them, which is huge. It breaks down the entire labor structure. Employers are competing with free government benefits for employees.

I know plenty of people who would go do this for extra money on the weekends. Sounds like the plant owners want their cake and eat it too.

No. It’s prevailing wage or minimum wage (state, fed, local) whichever is higher.

The big thing is that if you have no H2B then you can’t have illegal day workers mixed in because it really stands out.

Workers are paid by the # of tail meat they peel not hourly.
At one time the processors around Breaux Bridge used Vietnamese ladies.
That was 40 years ago though.

Has anyone considered that if the entire Louisiana crawfish industry is dependent on foreign labor that maybe we don't need to have this version of a crawfish industry? It's a bigger question than the price of crawfish. It's a question about what kind of polity you live in and whether or not it is strong and healthy.

The only way you can decry the underpaid sharecroppers of Reconstruction while at the same time wanting these H2B workers is if you have no problem exploiting foreigners for our benefit. Which is fine and consistent! I don't even necessarily disagree with you. But be man enough to admit that you like your exploited underclass that lacks the juridical rights of American citizens.

So, who did this job before they were able to get cheap slave labor?
