I know if I had a choice between Orlando or Great Lakes, I'd probably would have chosen Great Lakes. Orlando in the summer months is no different than N.O. with the heat and humidity.
True story. I got back to N.O. in late August of 70, still only 17 and still not wanting to be living at home. So, one day I take all my military paperwork and head downtown to the Custom's House where all the military recruiters were. I was determined to get in some branch of the military.
There I was, fresh out of Orlando sporting a buzz cut when I headed into the Air Force's office-----first thing the recruiter asked was "What branch did you get cut from, and why"? I asked how he came to that conclusion and he said a guy my age in 1970, sporting a buzz-cut didn't add up. I told him the truth and they turned me down.
So, out of frustration, I head to the Army recruiter----same outcome. So I say something about still having the Marines and Coast Guard to look into and he laughed and said-----------"Son, if the Army don't want you----NOBODY is going to take you". "Go home and enjoy your life because the military is not in the cards".
So, I went home, packed my bags, got in my old beater of a car and went to Jackson, MS, got a job and began my life on my own.

i mean - its a consolation, but at least we can say we tried LOL.

VQ-3. Let me tell you, I had to get a TSCI clearance to work in the SCIF and it took months. They even went to my childhood hometown and asked neighbors and locals about me.
Funny story, at Tinker we had to get thru Marines just to get into the compound let alone all the other security measures once inside.
Some junior officers decided to prank another and when he presented his ID at the marine checkpoint, they tackled him to the ground. His buds had put a mustache on his ID and Marines don’t play. CO had to go get him out of lockup in base.
