Yes. I look at land out there all the time since I visited Big Bend National Park. But I have people that rely on me at the moment so I can’t make that happen. Also I’d start to miss water so I’d have to budget a few really nice fishing trips per year.

Not west Texas, but if I don't remarry I am going to get a cabin in the mountains with a pile of books and a good fireplace and read, hike, hunt, and fish.

When the winter really sets in, I will snowshoe and read by the fire.

That sounds horrible. Drop me in a nice neighborhood in Medellin with a disco and a store within walking distance

Absolutely I could do it but I won't. I couldn't leave my family. I can't get my wife to move to Toledo Bend when we retire. I will have a nicer place down there to spend a few months at.

This.

But if circumstances were different. 1000% could move out there and just exist. It's freaking rough territory, but it's awesome.

A good friend of mine hit 65, retired, and is now the caretaker on a large Northern New Mexico ranch (mountainous AND water with fish). He has no maintenance duties - his "job" is to be a presence there. The owner and his family spend 4-6 weeks in the summer. He really likes it. He never goes anywhere. The only worry I have is he is at the age where medical issues can start to be issues. He's a long way from the doctor. The owners have him in a nice house, they pay him decent pay considering they pay all the household utilities and he gets a lot of food from them. He has dogs for company and I don't hear from him very often.

What do you think would have happened to Jack in The Shining if he didn’t have that bitch wife and weird kid?

West Texas has sidewinders. Did a TDY at Ft. Bliss, they were all over when we went to the field.

All I would need is internet access and a car. Maybe some good hiking boots and a liquor store within 20 miles.

I’m doing this. Wife is not coming.

Bring lotsa baby oil

If you asked me two weeks ago, I would have said no. But after what happened to me last week, yes. That sounds really tempting.

Before you do this, I recommended walking away from:

internet

liquor

Maybe what you're planning to walk away from is more valuable to you than you think it is.

I would probably live outside of the US. Maybe Thailand, Costa Rica, etc.

I would take a tent to a secret beach on Kauai and live off fish, chicken, and fruit.
