Alexander the Great’s army was around 40,000 strong when he went against the Persians.

You are dropped in there to defend a position with a modern M4 (selectable fire military version of the AR15) and 60 cases of ammo (60,000 rounds). Could you repulse that army’s attack?

One thing that comes to mind is gun wear / barrel erosion could stop your efforts.

Another is that you pop Alexander (or whichever ancient leader you select) from a distance the rest of the troops might break camp and run.

This would be you personally without nightvision, a support team, etc. You could possibly have the high ground.

ETA: You can have a suppressed rifle AND the enemy doesn’t initially know your position

Absolutely not.

They’d roll in on horses with archers and javelins and kill you with numbers.

They would think it's magic and probably run away or freak out and want to be a part of the magic army.

If they figure out it's not some form of wizardry, they will eventually get to you. You can only look in one direction at a time. What about food and water? You have to sleep some time. Once they figure that out you're cooked.

Just one guy? No. If by support team, you mean air cover or artillery, then absolutely.

ETA; Nevermind, I misread you. Absolutely not, that's an entire stadium of people rushing you at once. They'd overwhelm you.

I don't think one person could. I think it would be interesting to ponder the tipping point though. Could less than 10? More than 50?

maybe the worst "Could you..." question yet.

40,000 strong. Yea, not happening.

Are they going to all line up in a straight line and let them shoot you one by one?

You wouldn’t have time to get enough shots off.

Also, once they started throwing giant stones at you with a trebuchet, you would start realizing this whole thing is a really bad idea

A team of 6-8 could IMO.

Probably.

You wouldn't have to kill many for the army to think they were fighting black magic and run.

Killing a handful of soldiers from a distance longer than they could fathom and not being able to see what is killing them would absolutely wreck their minds.

Support team with a JTAC, a couple M240's, and other munitions would be an interesting angle...

What a supremely retarded thread.

Max effective range of and M4 is about 600 yards... they'd be able to close the gap pretty quickly ... and then you have mag changes... Negative

Now.. If I got to start said hypothetical battle from a fortified position and an m134 with the same ammo count and a M4 for back up.. Maybe

This is what makes it different than a zombie apocalypse scenario.

Sure, they can overrun you with numbers, but they're still humans and can get scared.

I think a rifle company with heavy weapons support could wreck any army up through the early 19th century. At least the initial encounter. Ancient people were just as intelligent as moderns. They would eventually figure out that these strange warriors are just men with superior technology, and are vastly outnumbered. Eventually they'd develop workarounds.

Cortez defeated the Aztec Empire with 300 men, but only because the other tribes hated the Aztecs so much they were willing to ally with the Spaniards.

then you're looking at more of a WW1 angle with human wave attacks against a fixed enemy position with MGs and artillery support. that makes it more feasible. would depend how far away they were when they start their charge and how well dug in you are.

but one guy with a single rifle? not a fricking chance.

Easy if I were at the end of a long, narrow hallway where they could only get in single file.

With that kind of numbers I think it would take at least a combat platoon. They may not have advanced weapons, but you couldn't reduce their numbers quickly enough to not get yourself simply overrun.

With significant firepower available a large combat platoon of 50 may be able to handle it. 40,000 is a big number to manage, even with a technological advantage.

No, you would be overwhelmed. Plus, needing to neutralize a soldier with every 1.5 rounds is going to have them get pretty close before you can begin to fire. Assuming you are starting with a rack grade M4 you will need to let them get to about 100 yards before you start firing. By 20k rounds that 4 MOA is going to spread quite a bit.
