Well, you take away the reloads, jams, and changing barrels, and don't give the legions javelins and thats a biased look. Add those and I think the number of legions that get within javelin range makes a huge difference.

I'm in agreement with a lot of folks here on the overwhelming numbers would eventually take its toll. You have to rest and recover; there's too many variables that work against a single fighter.

That said, in a fortified position with land mines and claymores you could put some hurt on them.

This reminds me of those IG scenario games where you have 10,000 terminators versus 500,000 Predators.

I was going to say no way in hell, but...

It depends on the terrain, for one thing. Flat, open field? You're toast.

But say, a Swiss mountain pass, from the high ground...

There's a reason the Swiss weren't invaded in WW1 or WW2. Wouldn't take a lot of dudes to hold that, even against comparably armed opponents.

M4's the wrong gun, though. You want something with reach, and good glass. Say a dozen men, and you would convince an ancient army to turn back, and put a big "NOPE" on their map going forward.

Not sure that formation is realistic

Looks like the way the marines are shooting they would turn most of them to hamburger first.

Seems the German MG42 had the highest fire rate, not sure on barrel changes. Seems for damage maybe you need the 50 cal with lots of barrel changes (and more than one man per gun. No telling how many a 50 cal could penetrate and kill with the same bullet.

Legions were multi capacity soldiers. Balista and catapult have longer ranges than javelins. They had calvary. They had specialty troops like light infantry, slingers, archers to attack and cut down a single type army (in your case infantrymen with short range / high rate of fire weapons).

Even with infinite ammo and magical barrels that don’t melt, imagine how physically taxing it would be to try to shoot 40k rounds. Even with hearing protection The constant booming would destroy my brain after a thousands of rounds without stopping

Also consider the Roman catapult had the "kill it with fire" option

My guess you need to modify the parameters (assuming fairly flat terrain)

360 opening heavy concrete bunker with reinforced concrete with highest elevation in battle. That would stop archers and catapults.

Way more than just one man inside said bunker with unlimited ammo

Snipers at range
High RoF heavy MG for next range (2 to 3 men each)
High RoF light MG for shorter range (1 man each)
Flamethrower for close range

All this with a baited field of mines, explosives, etc to slow oncoming army down.
