re: Cost of college is overblown. It does not cost anywhere near $200,000+

Why the frick would you do that?
I’m pretty sure I never said that you should. Let me explain my point to you more clearly. What I said was that by sending your kid to college, unless they are paying for it themselves, you are paying for them to live for four years. Why should a full college experience and a degree be less expensive than what it would take to live on a Walmart salary?

Correct to a degree. Grad school is still expensive no matter where you are but undergrad costs are heavily tied to region, public vs private, and instate vs out of state.
Out of state can still be affordable based on test scores, scholarships, and/or the Academic Common Market offering instate rates for degree programs not available in your home state.
There are also other ways around various issues. For example, move to a state, go to a community college, then establish residency to transfer into a school at the instate rate.

I have made your point before as well. The cost of college is inflated (and incorrect) because it includes living expenses (and sometimes) spending money, vehicle, etc.
You've been feeding your kid for 18 years, giving them spending money, paying for a vehicle, car insurance, etc. When they go to college, these are not new expenses.
So yes, in terms of cost -- these things do cost, as does TOPS, etc. But we are speaking in terms of actual new out-of-pocket expenses.
If your kid lives at home, do you factor in food and utility bill as a cost of college?

At LSU, estimated cost of attendance is $20,000-$33,0000 per year, depending on multiple factors. This number does not include TOPS or scholarships.
33,000/year * 4 years at minimum is 132,000. You factor in housing, food, etc, it’s certainly close to 200,000.

That number is the complete cost, including housing, meal plan, etc.

Not if you are out of state. It is more.

Currently, tuition for a full time semester (at least 12 hours) caps out at around 5300 bucks. That’s just strictly tuition, not including housing, meal plan, etc. and the cost keeps going up every year.

High GPA, great ACT score , Tops honors award, in state , live at home , alumni spiff, - all of that makes it incredibly cheap. A tiny fraction of your scenario.
So it’s all in the circumstances.

Probably an average. Baton Rouge doesn’t cost to live like Seattle.
Edit: it’s still overblown.

USMA invests 250k+ for each Cadet to complete 4 years of undergrad and to get commissioned.
So you’re technically incorrect

Well that's so cheap and reasonable, great point Steve!

No....if I have a kid....I’m more than likely just paying for their tuition and books(if even that). Assuming they are not able to qualify for scholarships. I’m damned sure not paying for their entire “experience”. frick that....that is what part time jobs are for.

So, you didn't even read my post. I clearly pointed out that college can easily cost that much, if you choose. Four years at Columbia in Manhattan could cost double that.
My point is that you can get an affordable college degree, if you choose.

Regardless, it's too damned expensive. Colleges have tried to turn themselves into a resort experience for students complete with logo shaped lazy rivers.
*looking at you LSU*
Brought to you by one of 83 student fees tacked on to tuition.

What was cost of living 10-20 years ago?
In 1992 LSU was $1024/semester for 18 hrs plus books. In 1994 I had an apartment off campus for about $600/Mo that I shared with a roomate.
Now, $3500/semester plus books and added fees. And same class apartment is $1100/Mo.
Tuition increased around 350% while rent just under 100%?
I have two in high school at BRMHS so trying to weigh options with respect to college. Hoping they get tips plus some additional scholarships

With TOPS, which I'm sure your kids would have at LSU, the cost of attendance is not too much more than you paid, without TOPS.
Whether TOPS is good can be argued, but it is here and is a fact.

I know LSU is at least 2-3x what it was 15 years ago. What the going rate for in state tuition?
Posted on 7/7/18 at 12:48 pm to tigeraddict
Tuition per semester doubled from just over $500 in 1986 to $1,000 per semester in 1989.

It's all relative.
It cost a lot of people who are going to medical school, law school, etc, but the average person can get the education they need for cheaper than many people perceive.
