Eh, OK maybe nobody is assuming that school is going to cost them $200K, but lots of people are freaking out about how they’re going to pay for their kid’s schooling and those freak outs are based on sticker prices that they’re probably not going to have to pay.

If a kid isn’t smart enough to earn a scholarship out of high school, they shouldn’t go to college.

They should mature in the military then have them pay for college after they are ready.

Or just get a real job or go to a trade school and learn a skill.

You think LA brain drain is bad now?

Go ahead and get rid of TOPS and watch LA turn into Ethiopia.

You're not comparing it to what prices were 10 or 20 years ago.

It's not a bargain at all.

Why do poor people need to go-to college? Can't they just YouTube courses..... If "everyone must have a chance to be educated"... Then fricking load the video.

Why MUST people be taught in person?

At LSU, estimated cost of attendance is $20,000-$33,0000 per year, depending on multiple factors. This number does not include TOPS or scholarships.

First, your evidence is anecdotal to you and doesn't override an overall study of the average cost of 4 years of college.

Secondly, the cost is the cost. You finding other sources of dollars to pay for it doesn't change the cost.

TOPS and scholarships don't reduce the cost - that money may not be coming out of your personal pocket, but it's coming out of someone's (and some of yours via taxes).

I'm on my phone right now, so can't send links. But, price inflation in higher ed is much higher than the overall inflation rate over the past few decades.

$200 k is a complete myth? Show me anywhere that somebody says that’s the minimum cost of college. Some schools do run that, so it’s not a “myth.”
exactly, his premise is false. He's arguing against a claim that hasn't been made.

I just used that calculator and the 4 year cost I got, living off campus but not with a parent, was $138,000.

That isn’t $200k, but still ridiculous

And a large portion of that is living expenses and meals. I assume your child needs to eat food and have a residence, regardless of whether he is going to college or working at Circle K.

I don’t know the numbers either, but I’m sure you’re right about that. The numbers are the numbers so that isn’t really up for debate. Whether or not the government is financially raping us on student loan interest rates is a separate debate as well. However, my thought on the overall cost of a college education is this:

Imagine your kid isn’t going to college. Let’s say they graduate high school, and you decide that you want to pay their living expenses for four years. You’re going to rent them an apartment, pay their bills and feed them. What price tag would put on that per year? Now, take that and add in a college education and access to facilities. To me, $20-30k seems reasonable.

Because having that degree opens doors that just having the knowledge doesn't.

LSU is essentially paying me to send my daughter there. It’s about time my gene pool produced an academic. At this point with two less diligent students behind her, I know I can redirect her Start program money a bit towards them.

Why?

I know a lot of people, mostly with younger children, that think college costs that much or more. All they read about is how expensive college is.

Since I've recently been through it, and did not find it to be that bad, I thought I would share my opinions.

Is that wrong?

I spent 15k for college 4 years ago. 90% of the kids with 100k dollar degrees will never make what I make.

You just outlined all of the problems with government subsidized loans.

Too many people get into college that really don't belong there and everyone pays more all because of easy access to large amounts of other people's money.

Plus stupid state top 10% rules like in TX. Forces a lot of TX kids, me included, out of state. Best state schools forced to take the best from bad schools over the students that are in the 15-30% range of the best schools, which in my graduating class still fell in the mid-90s gpa range.
