In Savannah, last I heard there's been 18 people with symptoms severe enough to meet criteria for Covid-19 testing and they've all been negative thus far.

The University of Washington Virology group has been running test on patients from across the country. Their update yesterday said they completed a daily total of 2,360 test with 8% positive, which has been pretty consistent. That seems to point to there not being a super high case load out there, probably thanks to the Trump admins restrictions on travel from China.

That's likely that person's normal mountain dew purchase, unrelated to the current crisis.

I've seen a lot of talk about makeshift ventilators. Ventilators have been in common use since 1961 and don't have to be super complicated.

There's been talk that maybe we should get a bunch of simple ones made in case we get in Italy's position.

Depending on the age of the OR/anesthesia ventilators, many of them do not have the same type of function as the bedside ventilators.

There's a lot more nuance in terms of vent settings that the bedside ones can do that the ones in OR may not be able to.

There’s not much difference.

Well yeah they don't have to be super complicated. At the end of the day the basic function is to more or less pump air into you and then out of you. Hence the reason most of the OR/anesthesia machines up until more recent models, didn't do much more than that. There's a fair bit of people who don't need complicated vent settings.

However when it comes to diseases like ARDS/pneumonias/etc. There is some medical utility to being able to set various parameters such as pressure/volume/rates/assist control/synchronization etc

It’s very important to be able to set specific tidal volumes in ARDS.

When did Italy cut off travel from China?

Not before all those Chinese that work in the textile factories came back to Italy after Chinese New Year

For one thing, if you don't know what you are doing, you can collapse someone's lungs with negative pressure for the out portion of the venilation.

We have cobbled together additional vents utilizing anesthesia carts and oscillators from the peds facility. We have enough to create another 12 bed ICU separate from our 42 bed ICU. Its amazing how quick pts are being weaned right now

3,000 ICU beds in New York State. @NYGovCuomo says 80% are currently occupied.

How many are occupied during a normal time?

That means nothing to me without a comparison.

It means something to you if you are the 3,001st patient that needs an icu bed.Right now they are 600 away from that scenario.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The CDC is no longer requiring state agencies to get a secondary confirmation on coronavirus tests that return positive.

According to the Louisiana Department of Health, the change was enacted Sunday, March 15.

“The CDC noted that lab tests have proven to be reliable and CDC confirmation of positive lab results is no longer needed. To reflect this change, results are considered positive instead of presumptive positive.”

Well I'm not in that situation, so that doesn't mean anything to me.
