Damn the Italian numbers are brutal especially considering that’s pretty much all northern Italy.

I simply said that could be a positive from this, that taking care of yourself is more than just something to do to look good in clothes etc etc There is nothing wrong or callous with saying that

Yea, it's not hard to see the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Also, that same news story has generated a multipage thread on the main board but only a few responses in this thread. Maybe this thread isn't as unstable as some would like to make it out to be

Nearly everyone that has been posting here since last week has said that our mortality rate data has been garbage and will go down with more testing.

Well, we are shutting everything down anyway. What's the difference?

Well, yeah — I don’t disagree that what’s happening now comes at a pretty serious cost in and of itself. I was mainly just pointing out that the opposite approach could easily get you similar or possibly worse results, even if the virus is less dangerous than it currently appears to be.

Perfect.

Spend more time on that than reading anything about this, because, honestly, there is almost zero usable information to gain here.

We are Americans. Let’s not forget that. We have overcome huge challenges before

But we didn't overcome those challenges by sitting around and ignoring the problem. We manned the frick up and got to work solving the problem together.

There's nothing the average citizen can do about this problem other than sit around and help to contain the spread. It's not like the Cajun Navy after a flood.

The immediate responses were along the lines of “that isn’t accurate” or “the average length of time before death is 18 days”, a concept that is completely unproven and happens to be the high end of the 2-18 day range people have been spouting.

Anything that is positive, but deemed unconfirmed, is frowned upon, but anything that is negative, unconfirmed or not, is met with “this is interesting and scary”.

Boobs for Scruffy. Thanks for being logical.

In Savannah, last I heard there's been 18 people with symptoms severe enough to meet criteria for Covid-19 testing and they've all been negative thus far.

Depending on the age of the OR/anesthesia ventilators, many of them do not have the same type of function as the bedside ventilators.

There's a lot more nuance in terms of vent settings that the bedside ones can do that the ones in OR may not be able to.

But better than nothing.

Good lord. I hope your wife the doctor is more compassionate than you. Some people have health conditions that are completely out of their control.

Of course. I’m one of them, as is my entire family of origin, and I feel qualified to say that there are almost always things you can do to mitigate the effects of any chronic condition IF you so choose. There’s a huge and visible difference in overall health and level of functioning between the 3 of us who do and the 2 who don’t, despite the fact that we share the same faulty genes and those 2 are both younger on average with fewer comorbid conditions.

I think all he was saying is that there’s never a downside to taking better care of yourself, and this scare could serve as the wake-up call that ultimately makes us healthier as a nation. That would be a pretty big silver lining, no?

You're not wrong, but doing nothing in this case is doing something. It's literally the easiest thing in the world to do.

And I say this as someone who has to make payroll for fifty people every week. I'm pretty scared of the economic ramifications of all of this for myself, my business, and my employees, but I'm also smart enough to to listen to smarter people than myself and understand things could get a lot worse if we don't do something now.
