If an almighty force could tell you covid-19 would kill "only" 50,000 people in the US this year, and years going forward, would you be ok with going forward without anymore cancellations and news stories?

That is not going to happen, but I'll play along.

quote:

While the impact of flu varies, it places a substantial burden on the health of people in the United States each year. CDC estimates that influenza has resulted in between 9 million – 45 million illnesses, between 140,000 – 810,000 hospitalizations and between 12,000 – 61,000 deaths annually since 2010.

Does this stop people from living their day to day life? No. Most people during flu season pay attention to their hygiene, and if they feel sick will stay home to keep from infection everyone else.

quote:

Nearly 1.25 million people die in road crashes each year, on average 3,287 deaths a day. An additional 20-50 million are injured or disabled. More than half of all road traffic deaths occur among young adults ages 15-44.

Vehicles will kill 1.25 million people this year, yet people will still get in a vehicle daily and risk it. What do most people do to combat it? They drive safe and buckle up. That still will not save them from the idiots that drive on the road, but we go on with our lives.

That's just wrong.

The per person density of a parade is way higher than those in school and work. It's basically impossible to have social spacing at a parade.

Well, some friends started a pubcrawl facebook event to replace the Irish Channel parade and it already has thousands of people interested in about 12 hours.

I don't think cancelling did anything.

Someone yesterday tried to say that 8 million could be infected in the US within weeks.

Don’t know if it is covered already, but cases came up positive in Tarrant and Dallas county’s late last night.

LINK

Looks like someone attending the tornado telethon in Nashville had it. There were a few popular musicians there. This could be interesting.

And lots of testing to identify the mild cases that could be super spreaders like S Korea did.

Correct.

South Korea and Singapore are the models on how to handle these events.

It’s almost impossible to predict the rate at which this will spread. There’s too many variables.

Months more like.....but that strikes you as wholly unrealistic?

And in any case, an idiot or two doesn’t mean it’s a core perspective of everyone who isn’t irritated that this is getting any airtime.

I think we can. People are going to adapt and stop going to events with other people, stop shaking hands, work from home, school will be out for summer, etc etc etc. Restaurants, Airlines, Cruises, Hotels, etc will hurt.

People will adapt. I am a believer.

Agree

I think the best thing that could happen is if our society at large accepts this is going to be a cautious, quiet, event-free spring/summer. Make the best of it. Hang out with neighbors, cook at home, etc. Don't panic, just accept life is going to be different (but hopefully not really miserable) for 6 months or so.

It's a stupid hypothetical.
Not it isnt

I am making a point that you and everyone else in here has made it a point in life to accept 50k deaths a year as an ok number for us to still have all events and large gatherings go on as normal during winter

Because, we could still take further measures to decrease the spread of the flu, but we have decided that we do not need to

Maybe.

But only a small percentage of those would actually get tested and confirmed.

EDIT: I would disagree with "weeks" - maybe months

Yes, bc the flu is contained relatively by a vaccine. The risk is known. The risk to this virus? Unknown.

Big difference.

Thats what my hypothetical was for

I said what if you could know this virus would "only" kill 50k annually. Good to go forward as normal, right?

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, issued a disturbing warning during a White House briefing Tuesday: Americans everywhere need to change the way they live their lives. Right now.
"We would like the country to realize that as a nation, we can't be doing the kinds of things we were doing a few months ago. It doesn't matter if you're in a state that has no cases or one case," Fauci said, referring Americans to the new federal Coronavirus.gov website for details on precautions to take at home, at work and out in the world.
"If and when the infections will come -- and they will come, sorry to say, sad to say -- when you're dealing with an infectious disease... we want to be where the infection is going to be, as well as where it is," Fauci said.
"Everybody should say, 'All hands on deck,'" he added.

That was from yesterday’s presser. Seems to me the questions asked after each briefing are mostly orchestrated to waste time with very few direct questions the American people actually want to hear. And, if they are asked, the media doesn’t demand the task force person directed to respond to actually answer when they dance around the questions.

But hey, what the hell do I know about the media?
